I built a habit tracker with no streaks. Was that a mistake?

For years I bounced between habit apps and quit every single one. The pattern was always the same: I would miss one day, the streak counter would reset to zero, and that little number made me feel like a failure. So I stopped opening the app, and the habit died with it.

At some point I realized the streak was not motivating me. It was punishing me for being human. Rest days, sick days, life happening: all treated as failure.

So I built the opposite. SevenGrid shows your whole week on one screen. You set a goal like "3 times this week" instead of an unbroken chain, and you can plan rest days on purpose. There is no streak counter anywhere in the app. It stays entirely on your phone: no account, no cloud, no sign-up. And it is a one-time purchase, because I did not want to charge a subscription for something this simple.

The scary part: "no streaks" is the exact opposite of what every big habit app does. Streaks are the retention engine. By removing them I am betting that gentleness keeps people around longer than guilt does. I genuinely do not know yet if that is true.

So I will ask the people who would know: do streaks actually help you, or do they eventually make you quit too? And would you ever pay once for a habit app instead of subscribing?

It is on Google Play now (Android only, solo dev). Happy to answer anything about the build or the calm-tech angle.
