I built a status line that pays you half of what it earns while your AI agent thinks
Meanwhile is a status line for Claude Code (also Copilot CLI and VS Code). While your AI agent is thinking, it shows a rotating tip, and occasionally a clearly-labeled "(sponsored)" line instead. When a sponsor line shows, half of what it earns is paid to you over PayPal.
Why I built it: I'm solo, no ad budget, and wanted to see if a status line could actually pay for itself instead of just reporting usage numbers back at you, which is what most Claude Code status lines do.
How it's honest about what it is:
- Real ads only, always labeled "(sponsored)", never disguised as a tip
- The server only bills a sponsor after verifying genuine session activity (cost/tokens actually increasing), so a script pinging it on a timer can't fake impressions
- Most lines are still just plain tips -- there's no pretending otherwise
- No signup to try: npx trymeanwhile

Just shipped a referral system too: if someone installs through your link, you get a cut of what they earn later, funded from the house's own share, not theirs.

Genuinely early -- most installs so far are probably one-time tries, not daily users. Curious what this community thinks of the core idea: is "get paid to wait" something you'd actually run, or does a sponsor line in your terminal feel like a line you wouldn't cross even when it's disclosed and capped?
The interesting test isn't whether people will try “get paid to wait” once, but whether they keep it installed. Are early users still running Meanwhile after the novelty wears off, especially once they start seeing sponsored lines?
Showing the sponsored line only after verifying real session activity is a strong trust choice. For an indie tool, I would also watch whether the status line creates a habit or merely earns attention once. Retention by active days and sponsor revenue per active hour should tell you which tips are worth keeping.
