Most AI tools help you think faster. I wanted one that helps you think better.
Crucible is a platform where you bring a half-formed idea and the AI plays devil's advocate — pushing back, poking holes, asking the questions a good mentor would. When the idea survives the pressure, you publish it to a feed where others can engage, build on it, or tear it apart further.
Why I built it
I kept seeing the same pattern: someone has an idea, asks ChatGPT about it, gets enthusiastic validation, feels great for 10 minutes, then does nothing. The AI was acting as a yes-man, not a thought partner. Crucible is the opposite — it's programmed to challenge, not to flatter.
How it works
You pick a domain and genre (e.g. Tech → Contrarian Take)
The AI debates you turn-by-turn, refusing to let you coast
When your idea is sharp enough, it drafts a title + summary for you to publish
Other users can "spark" (upvote), comment, or build their own idea on top of yours
Tech stack
React + FastAPI + Supabase + Stripe + Anthropic. Streaming SSE for the chat so it feels responsive. The session system enforces turn limits per tier — Free gets 7 turns, paid tiers get more. I added a "Bring Your Own Key" tier (Alchemist) so power users can run on their own Claude/GPT/Gemini quota.
What I'm proud of
The safety layer was something I thought hard about. Crucible is built for intellectual sparring — not life advice. If someone starts expressing distress, the AI redirects them to crisis resources (Samaritans, Crisis Text Line, etc.) and locks the session. I didn't want to build something that could make a bad day worse.
Where it is now
Just shipped the multi-provider AI support, subscription tiers, and the full social layer. Looking for early users who have too many half-baked ideas and not enough pushback.
Would love feedback — especially from anyone who's tried building in the "AI as challenger" space. What would make you actually use something like this daily?
