I built an app but not many users use it

I built an app that counts things, had a few users try out the functionality but that's about it no long term users. So far I haven't developed the subscription feature and I'm not sure if I still need to. Please let me know if you have any comments!

Be clear about the problem you are solving. If you know about the problem, it should be easy to identify your target audience / potential customers.

I want to second this. As a developer or engineer, we often fall in love with the product and not the problem. But looking at the problem first, and solution last, can help you identify a valuable market.

I'm trying. Maybe I should slow down.

What's the target audience in your opinion?

Hey! Here I leave you two ideas:

    1. Search in Google posts that talk about apps to count things. Write them to include your app. Offer them something in return (if you have an affiliation, all the better).

    2. Hire TikTokers to run contests and upload photos asking their followers to guess how many things there are. Then have them use the app in public to give the results of the contest.

Very useful idea, thanks for the offer!

Find your audience, do a small video ad. make sure to point out the pain points. It will grow like wild fr

I'll try it. Thanks for the great idea.

I would recommend you to gather user feedback even if they leave you might still have their email. send them email asking why they leave the app(give options to make it easy for users, conduct market research, and focus on improving user retention before deciding whether to implement a subscription feature.

Currently the app uses an anonymous login scheme and I can't get the user's contact information unless they reach out to me

I wouldn't focus on monetization yet. How often are you speaking with your users? Do you know what issues they're having with your app? I would start with a thorough understanding of your users, their pain points, and go from there. Best of luck!

There are no effective communication channels yet, some users have given feedback on objects they need to recognize and I will contact them via email, but I haven't received a reply yet!

      1. 1

I would add a link in your app to a feature request/bug form. You need to figure out some direct communication channels

it's possible you might be in the wrong space. Apps are more B2C than B2B and your app seems to be for business more than people. Also you might have a marketing problem, which is fine until you know that the software is valuable.

I'd say contact a few business who might need counting, explain you want to help them help you (they get the software you get their feedback). Once you have the feedback of some users you'll know if it has a value and then you can decide if it's worth investing time and money on marketing.

Also, I would suggest you add a feature to read bar codes (it's quite trivial) and to send the count to a user defined URL. Who knows, it could make a potential ERP integration easy

A suggestion I can give you is that: develop the subscription at the beggining, if you developer subscription when the user amount is big, they might not like to pay for it because they use it for free in a long time.

Yes, I'm working on the subscription feature

there is another app, CountThings, which has 1 million download in App Store, so that means there is definitely a need for it!

target these users, find who are they, where they are, what are they using it for.

maybe the need a feature that is not present in this app, you can add it and start to compete with it, add more features or ... .

This is what I call solving a problem no one asked for.

As others said, for me this is a b2b solution, you need to find people who need it for work.

However, maybe add a gamified version where users guess how many items there are.

So everybody guesses the number, and then the solution is shown. Kids may like that.

Have you identified which counting jobs? Have you asked Chat GPT to generate you a list of jobs which involve repetition in counting?

  12. 1

What industries / user applications do you think this would be useful for? Like who are you targeting?

    1. 1

I think it would be useful for people with repetitive counting jobs, the problem at the moment is that I can't seem to find this group of users

This would be really handy for people working in a industrial stores departments. For example where I work, sometimes they have to count multiple small items, like nuts and bolts.

But they just use a scale to weigh out large quantities.

Maybe niche down your most common and obvious user first?
