I built an open source tool to make websites visible to AI search engines. Here's what I learned.

I manage WordPress sites for a living. Have been doing it for 15 years. A few months ago I noticed something weird: sites that rank top 3 on Google were completely invisible on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude search.

Not buried. Invisible. Zero citations.

The reason is simple. AI search engines don't return a list of links. They give one answer and cite 3-4 sources. If your content isn't structured for citation, you don't exist.

I dug into the research. Princeton published a paper (KDD 2024) where they tested 10,000 real queries on Perplexity. They found that specific optimization methods boosted AI visibility by up to 115%. Not vague advice. Measurable techniques like adding statistics (+40%), citing external sources (+115%), and improving content fluency.

So I built GEO Optimizer. It's a Python CLI that audits your site against everything AI search engines look for and generates the missing pieces.

What it checks:

- robots.txt: are the 24 AI bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot, etc.) allowed to crawl you?

- /llms.txt: do you have the AI-readable index file at your root?

- JSON-LD schema: WebSite, FAQPage, WebApplication structured data

- Meta tags: description, canonical, Open Graph

- 42 citability signals: readability, voice search readiness, entity disambiguation, social proof, accessibility, anchor text quality, content freshness, and more

You get a 0-100 GEO score and a separate Citability Score based on 18+ research-backed methods (Princeton KDD 2024, AutoGEO ICLR 2026, SE Ranking 2025).

The "fix" command generates everything that's missing: robots.txt patches, llms.txt, JSON-LD blocks, meta tags. One command, dry-run by default.

Just shipped v3.16.0 with 812 tests passing, PDF report export, and an MCP server (8 tools) so you can run audits directly from Claude or Cursor.

It's open source, pip installable, no API keys. I built it because I needed it for my own sites and for AgencyPilot, the SaaS I'm building for WordPress agency management.

If you run a content site, a SaaS, or anything that depends on search traffic, try it:
