I built ChessBooker to stop scheduling chess lessons over DMs and back-and-forth

Hey Indie Hackers 👋

I’m Miguel, a solo founder and chess player.

I built ChessBooker after looking for my first chess coach and realizing how painful scheduling lessons was. Everything happened over DMs or email — long back-and-forth threads, time zone confusion, and waiting just to confirm a time.

ChessBooker is a simple booking page built specifically for chess coaches:

  • Coaches set availability and lesson length once

  • Students book instantly via a link (no DMs, no waiting)

  • Calendar events and meeting links are created automatically

  • Past lessons stay organized in one place

I’m currently running a free pilot and building this in public. I’m not trying to scale fast — I’m trying to learn.

I’d really love feedback on:

  • Is this a real problem worth solving in a niche like chess coaching?

  • What would make this a no-brainer for coaches?

  • Anything that feels unclear or unnecessary?

Thanks for reading — happy to answer questions or share more about the build.

Have you thought about maybe pushing to inner city schools?

That’s a great idea, thank you!

I’ve thought about education as a longer-term direction, especially for after-school programs or partnerships with coaches who already work with schools. Right now I’m focused on validating the product with independent coaches first, but inner-city schools are definitely an area I’d love to explore once the core workflow is solid.

If you’ve seen good examples of chess programs in schools doing this well, I’d love to learn from them.

Superniche! I like it. Site looks very clean.

I had a similar thought as goofy but seems like chess coaching workflow might be different? Is it because it needs to be constantly adjusted based on the student's progress as opposed to a fixed progress path?

Neat idea! I wonder how specific it needs to be to chess - it seems like general education or scheduling platforms should provide similar functionality?

Fair point. Generic tools cover scheduling, but ChessBooker is built around the chess coaching workflow - fixed lesson lengths, time zones, lesson history, and now homework/recap sharing. The roadmap goes beyond booking into student progress and retention.
