I built NomadExpenses - Spending Tracker App For Digital Nomads & Travellers

Hello everyone!

I was a long-time Revolut user (I still am), and in Europe, I paid for almost everything with it just because of the built-in analytics and budget tracking. We even had a joint account with my girlfriend to keep track of our shared expenses.

Everything was great until we moved to Asia and started to live a nomadic lifestyle. There are still places in the world where cash is still king and you just can’t pay by card. We juggled with cash and card for some time, now it is QR payments, cash, and card (for bigger payments in trusted places). But, as you can imagine, our spending tracking system went to hell with this variety of payment methods.

I started to look for a solution, tested a bunch of expense tracking apps on the App Store, but the closest thing I could find to the features list we needed was TravelSpend. It probably works great if you are a tourist, but we needed monthly-based tracking, not trip-based.

The features list we were looking for:

  • Monthly budget target and spending stats in our home currency (my income still in CZK)

  • Multi-currency support: to pay in VND, THB or whatever and don’t convert in our heads or using the calculator app, but I still need to see both numbers (paid in and home currency)

  • Shared expense space, so we can log everything in one place, but using our own devices

  • Offline support (sometimes mobile internet sucks or you just don’t need a local SIM card during a short layover)

  • An ability to see how much we spend in each country we lived in, but stay on track of our monthly target, even if we moved in the middle of the month

That’s how NomadExpenses was born. I scratched my own itch and learned Swift in the process, but I believe I am not alone in this.

I would be grateful for any feedback 🙏
