Yesterday, I published my first side project. It's not finished yet, and I have only published the landing page with a newsletter form, but it's very exciting to finally take a leap of faith and ship something out there.
I've worked on a few other projects for the past months and all of them just died. I didn't even kow how to market them, or tho whom they were targeted. Then I joined a subreddit for Marvel Legends figures collectors.
I started sharing pictures of the Marvel Legends I bought, and posting some discussions. And then it hit me. I prototyped a simple MLF (Marvel Legends Figures) management app with a little of TailwindCSS. No backend. No Database. Recorded the screen for a few seconds and shared it.
People loved it. It got almost 400 upvotes and 80 comments. So I started to work on the app right away.

I posted 4 more videos with different requested features and constantly asked the collectors what features do they wanted on the app. I tried to respond every comment and question they have. And finally, yesterday, I posted a 6th video with the app domain on it and asked them to join the newsletter.

So this is what I learned:
You need to find a very specific niche. One of the previous side projects I tried to work on was an expenses management app. There are like a thousand already out there. Nobody needs a new one that does the same the others already do.
Before posting the first video I asked the MLF collectors if they keep track of their collections. Most of them used notes on the cellphone or a spreadsheet. And most of the were interested in an alternative.
I constantly ask them what they think about what I've shown them. What they want, What they'd like the app to do.
I'm just starting , and honestly I think I was a bit lucky. Let me know what you think
Agree - a niche, a niche, and a niche. Always the case for founders/makers :)
