I created 6 (six) side-projects over this weekend 😮‍💨

1/6 https://uploadfile.click

It is a single-page web app that uploads your file and gives you a direct URL. That’s all!

image-h2fhy

I often need this tool when I work: to embed an image to product hunt or indie hackers (both require a direct link) or to embed a video on a web page. I will use this app to solve the problem of hosting videos online for the clients of Paracast.io as well. So I hope to earn money from it indirectly, by helping the users of my SaaS.

Problems: It is a super risky project. I know that the file hosting business is hard for 2 reasons:

  1. costs
  2. malice

I solved problem 1) (costs) by hosting the files on Cloudflare R2 which offers generous $0 traffic costs. But I know that Cloudflare can turn into a bitch anytime and force me to pay.

This is why I moved the project to a separate Cloudflare to protect my other projects. I charge users nothing because I do not want to have full responsibility for the files' uptime. I will keep the service alive and pay for the storage costs, but if it begins to cost me thousands I will just shut it down.

The 2) problem is more tricky. Some odd ones may want to upload DMCA-protected files or pictures of naked persons or viruses. It may nuke the project overnight as well. I supplied a captcha, a nude pictures/video detector (try it!) and a virus detector to protect the project. Let’s see how it will go.

Code: the whole project was coded by Sonnet 3.5. Tech stack: next js, react, vercel, cvs file as a database.

2/6 https://makeimagetransparent.com/

A single page app that removes background from an image. The purpose of this side project is to drive traffic from SEO.

Untitled-2-hxlkb

Code: I forked the repository of another maker. I was doubting a lot because it feels unfair. Technically, I just stole the code. It is not what I used to do. I create, not steal.

But I did this intentionally. I want to become less artist and more businessman. I want to have less emotion-driven decisions in my maker’s career. I found a keyword opportunity. I found an open-source code. I made it work for me, strictly following the license agreements. Sounds fine.

If you want to blame me for non-ethical maker behavior, please go on. I’m ready!

3/6 awspricingcalculator.dev

A simple calculator app that helps people to find out how much AWS EC2 and S3 will cost them.

Untitled-4-o5y7m

Problem: I needed to launch an ec2 instance for my new project: Startups Wiki. I opened the ec2 pricing page but I was not able to figure out the cost because AWS shows prices PER HOUR 🫠🫠

Like this: $0.0042/h.

It is impossible to get the full picture of your future costs. They do it intentionally I suppose. A typical corp's trick. OK... SEO opportunity: I plan this project to bring me 10,000 visitors per month in a year from Google. Then I will send the visitors to the relevant SaaS.

Code: Vanilla JS generated by Sonnet 3.5.

4/6 aivideo.tools

It is a directory of all AI video editors, generators, and clip makers. Tech: the directory is made on the marvelous @unicornplatform. If you haven’t checked it since I sold it in 2022, you should do it.

John Rush is turning it from a landing page generator to a website builder, an actual platform. The purpose of this project is to drive traffic from SEO and obviously promote my own AI video tool. The keywords have “medium” difficulty but I will still try to fight and get the traffic.

5/6 seoai.tools

seoai.tools is a directory of all SEO tools that use the power of AI.

Untitled-8-bfmp7

AI SEO is a rising trend now. And it is not only about content writers and blog generators such as @seobotai. Some companies create AI tools for link building, internal linking, keyword research, and schema generation.

I’m super curious to watch the SEO scene these days because AI seems to remove the boring part of it.

Tech stack: Unicorn Platform.

6/6 opensourceai.software

A directory of AI open source github repositories. AI is booming now. The fastest players in a booming niche are people with money. This is why there is not much open sourced (free) AI projects right now. But as time goes the niche will evolve and more and more enthusiasts will create OS AI projects. I believe this keyword has the potential of bringing me 5k monthly views over the next 3-5 years.

First of all... You're an absolute machine. Secondly, what are you using for keyword research? all the well known companies are ridiculously expensive.

    1. 1

Yeah, that's a pretty insane weekend.

    2. 1

I second this ! And the SEO tool shown in the pictures is the Google Keyword planner.

  2. 2

I noticed that several of these projects are directories. How do you source the content of these directories in the first place? Is it manual work, scraped or based on an existing list?

    1. 1

Hey. Yes, it is a 100% manual labor. I searched from tools on other directories and on my own bookmarks.

      1. 1

alright, so quite some work invested in the background to source the info.
In those directories websites, do you offer a possibility for users to submit their own entries or suggest new ones?

        1. 1

Yes I offer users to submit new items! This is how I keep them fresh.

          1. 1

This reminds me that one day, I'll have to launch my LinkedIn cringe posts directory. A collection of cringe posts that are found on LinkedIn.

  3. 2

It would be really appreciated, if you guide us accrordingly.

    1. 1

Sure! What do you want to know?

  4. 2

i need that craziness. the project were cool and well thought out.

  5. 2

Can you share how you go about keyword research ? Is it just about having an idea and checking the numbers or is there a more data driven discovery process ?

    1. 1
      1. I work normally
      2. I have some problem
      3. I check the keyword for it on https://ads.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/
      4. If the keyword has 10k-100k searches and low competition, I take it and create a side project for it.
  6. 2

Don't feel much guilt about copying others code.

I read somewhere that "Good artist copies it, Great Artist steals it". -- Pablo Picasso

    1. 2

Yeah but pretty sure he wasn't referring to something like blatantly steal code and use it as yours.

      1. 1

I agree. It is not OK to steal. But I still decided to do it because the license allows to do it. The author chose the license intentionally. This licenses obliges me leave a link to the original repository which I did. It gives the original code free promotion. So it is a win-win for both of us.
If the author did not want this win-win, he would have chosen another license.

    2. 1

I prefer to create new things and I still do it. This time I decided to fork an existing project. It is a pure business decision - a new thing to me.

Hi Alexander, this is super cool. This inspired me to go all in on my brand new productized service. Keep it up! You're crushing it!

    1. 1

      Here is the link: BlinkOvo.com

Hi Alexander, that's insane amount of work for a weekend!

A doubt regarding the single page tools, like image transparent maker etc, could they be monetized with Google Adsense? I read somewhere that they are no longer being monetized in the last couple of years. Any idea on this?

  9. 1

How and when do you plan on monetising the directory ?

  10. 1

    Amazing! Great job.

  11. 1

Amazing, I really like the make image transparent tool.

    1. 1

Enjoy! It will be free forever

  12. 1

This was a great post, and boy, were you busy! It's encouraging to see how quickly side projects can be launched, but the key is to have ones that really solve a problem. Thanks for sharing!

  13. 1

I'm working on optimizing my website for the keyword "Honista," but I've noticed that I'm receiving clicks for the incorrect keyword "Honisat." This discrepancy is impacting my SEO efforts and user experience.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue or have any suggestions on how to correct this? I’d appreciate any advice on how to ensure that clicks are directed to the correct keyword and improve my search accuracy.

  14. 1

Whoa, how did this happen? I'd like to see you break that down 🥴
Regardless aivideo.tools really caught my eye :)

    1. 1

Thanks. Do you think the domain https://aivideo.tools/ is OK? Did you see a site URL when you saw it?
I'm still doubting about using .tools.
