About the part-time job -- yeah, I need to be following that path as well 😁My runway $ is close to an end (probably another 4 months), and I've enrolled in toptal. I've just passed their 3rd interview, and now I have a problem to solve, and we'll see in 2 weeks how it goes 😁
Close friends: agreed 100%. Personally, I barely have time to meet😁
Less time on twitter: I too consume too much of it. For me, it's really bad, because when I compile my project, sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes. And what can I do in the mean time?😎
Less time reading the news: agree 100% - I've stopped reading the news a long time ago, I don't have a TV, and especially with covid, it was reaaally depressing.

Good write-up. I'd love to find out if you made much of a routine each day. Seems like you didn't, but curious as I sometimes take a few days away and prepare a routine before I go
On the rest of what you posted, I have had a career/business path which is similar to what you are talking about. I took a part-time university lecturer job in the UK at Northumbria and eventually became an associate - which is a half-time post with a salary (important for the holidays you get) and at the time this paid £25k/year. That, combined with some money the business was bringing in, allowed me to pay my mortgage, buy a decent car and food on the table. I could then focus the rest of the time on the business. It's funny because the 2 days I actually spent at University I treated like the weekend and that left me 5 solid days to work.
The key for me was building up passive income businesses, and using that money to fund the purchase of investment property, which would start to actually pay out 15 years later. I started my journey in 1994, so a LONG time ago. But it's similar to what you are discussing. I could have retired years ago, but love what I do.
Oh, finally, it took more than 5 years, but a business I set up brought in a regular profit of 300-500k/year through re-investing everything back in. That is SaaS business.
Sounds like you had a good reset and, as you said at the beginning, you have recommitted yourself to this path. Good luck with it

As for routine, I did reading and writing in the morning, then went for a cycle in the afternoon, then more reading and writing in the evening.
What were you teaching at university? This sounds like a great arrangement! I actually thought of going into academia and I might still do so in future if I can retire early. Although the pay and conditions in UK universities now is more like being an Uber driver than a traditional academic!

I thought something called Multimedia Design, which was just as the internet was getting started - it was more about creating content onto interactive CD and DVD. Macromedia Director mainly. I was self-taught, after doing a business degree. Yeah the pay is not great, BUT it's relatively easy as a gig. It really helped me and I do wonder if I would be where I am today if I hadn't done it. Any role that gives you enough money to live would be good though and then work towards something like 2x or 3x that salary in 'passive' income before you quit.
Keep going. It's over used, but I'll do it anyway - the journey is what it's about. As an entrepreneur, the destination will always change and always be out of reach!!
