I found an indie horror game that really surprised me (and made it playable in browser)

A scene from Kingdom of Marionettes featuring the unsettling puppet theater and expressive characters that define its unique horror atmosphere.

Recently I came across an indie horror visual novel called Kingdom of Marionettes, and I didn’t expect it to stick with me this much.

The game takes place in an abandoned puppet theater where you work as a night security guard. Sounds simple at first — until you realize the puppets aren’t exactly… lifeless.

There’s this mischievous clown character who interacts with you in a strangely playful but unsettling way. The expressions, the dialogue, and the shifting tone between humor and tension make it really memorable. At times it feels charming, and then suddenly it becomes deeply uncomfortable in the best way.

What I really liked is how much the game leans into atmosphere and character rather than cheap jumpscares. Your choices actually matter, and there are multiple endings (including a hidden one), which makes it worth exploring different paths.

The art style is also amazing — expressive characters, strong visual identity, and a UI that actually enhances immersion instead of getting in the way.

The only downside?

It’s officially only available on PC.

I wanted to play it on my Mac and phone, but couldn’t — so I ended up putting together a browser-playable version to make it easier to access.

If anyone’s curious, you can try it here:

No installation needed, just runs in your browser.

I’m honestly surprised this game isn’t talked about more. If you like indie horror, visual novels, or character-driven stories, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Would love to hear what others think if you’ve played it.
