I freelanced on Upwork and hated writing weekly client updates so I automated it

When I was freelancing on Upwork, the hardest part of the job wasn’t the code.

It was the weekly client updates.

Every Friday I’d stare at a blank email trying to:

  • remember what I actually worked on

  • make it sound valuable

  • not oversell or undersell progress

If I skipped updates, clients got anxious.

If I rushed them, they sounded sloppy.

I tried:

  • keeping notes (never kept up)

  • reusing templates (felt fake)

  • promising myself I’d “do it better next week”

What finally clicked was realizing I already produce signals of work every week:

  • GitHub PRs and commits

  • merged features

  • bug fixes and refactors

So I built a small tool that:

  • looks at recent GitHub activity (including private repos)

  • summarizes the actual work done

  • drafts a clean, client-safe weekly update

  • lets me review and send in under a minute

Manual notes are optional, but the goal is automation; approve & send.

I’m curious:

  • How do you handle client updates today?

  • Is this a real pain for you, or just me?

  • What would make something like this actually useful?

If anyone wants to try it or give blunt feedback, I’m happy to share more.

hey, i have an idea on this niche and market i can validate the idea but also looking for a co-founder for it so that i can analyze it better and he can take care of the marketing and user acquisitions. i can take care of planning and mvp and all. as i can see its already a successful project u already crossed a milestone u might be a good fit for this and u can target those same clients onto this. let me know if interested.

Hey, I came across ClientPing and spent a few minutes on the homepage, really like the core idea. One thing I noticed: the page doesn't have any testimonials or user stories, which is a tough gap for a tool asking freelancers to trust AI with their client communication. That trust barrier is probably the biggest thing holding back signups right now.

Also noticed the "Watch Demo" CTA in the hero doesn't lead to an actual demo on the page, for a product where the magic is seeing it work in 60 seconds, that's a missed opportunity.

Anyway, rooting for it, the problem it solves is real.

Great tool, but 'Watch demo' button does not work :)
