I gave my marketing partner $300 for Google Ads. He got me 6 signups and 2 actual users. Here's what I learned building ClipToContent.

Hey IH,

I'm Nikos - indie hacker, solo founder of ClipToContent.ai. It takes a YouTube URL and turns it into a publish-ready blog post in under 2 minutes.

I want to share the ugly numbers first.

The $300 experiment

Brought on a marketing partner to run Google Ads. "Target content creators, drive signups." Simple plan.

Here's what $300 bought:

  • 6 total signups
  • 4 verified email (2 bounced)
  • 2 actually used the product
  • 0 converted to paid
  • $50/signup — $150/engaged user

For a $19/mo tool, healthy CAC should be $30-50 for a paying customer. I was paying $150 for someone who clicked around and left.

What went wrong

1. Skipped validation. Went from "it works" to "buy traffic." Never confirmed strangers would pay.

2. Landing page spoke features, not pain. Said "AI-powered transcription." Should have said "Your blog hasn't been updated in 3 weeks and you just recorded a 45-min podcast."

3. Wrong targeting. Broad terms attracted curious devs, not YouTubers with the actual problem.

What I'm doing now

Parted ways with the partner. Not because they're bad - because I was outsourcing the one thing you can't outsource at this stage: learning whether people want what you built.

New plan:

Manual validation (this week):

  • DMing 50 YouTube creators (5K-50K subs)
  • Free unlimited access
  • One question: "Would you pay $19/mo for this?"

Community-first distribution:

  • Reddit (r/NewTubers, r/content_marketing) - sharing the workflow, not pitching
  • This IH post
  • Building in public on X

Product Hunt launch (~3 weeks out):

  • Only if validation confirms demand
  • Will share the full playbook here

The product (30 seconds)

Paste YouTube URL → ClipToContent transcribes, extracts key points, structures a blog post with headings and formatting → publish-ready article in ~90 seconds.

Built it because I was repurposing my own videos manually. 2-3 hours per video → now 2 minutes.

What I want from you

Not pitching. Genuinely asking:

  1. Content creators: Would you use this? What makes $19/mo worth it?
  2. Founders who've been here: Validate first, then scale - right call?
  3. Anyone who's run early-stage ads: Was $50 CAC a red flag or normal for cold traffic to unknown brand?

Updating this post with real numbers as they come in.

You’re actually asking the right questions now — the shift from ads to validation is a strong move

$50 CAC for cold traffic to an unknown tool isn’t unusual, but 0 conversions usually points more to positioning than ads.

Quick thought — when creators try it, do they immediately see a “this saves me time” moment, or do they need to figure it out first?
That part usually decides if they’ll pay or not.
