I got approved for AppSumo, but should I take the last steps?

I got approved on AppSumo with Pull Dog (https://dogger.io/#pull-dog), a GitHub app for developers.

However, when I look at it, I see a few potential issues:

  • They are going to expose it privately only until I get five reviews.
  • I'm making a tool for developers. Maybe AppSumo is not the right audience?
  • They want me to fill out a very long form, generates quite a few graphical assets, and create a whole coupon code system. That's time-consuming!

So my main question is. Is it worth it, given the above conditions? I'm having a hard time motivating myself to go through the last steps because of that.

On the other hand, when I then start working on other features, I also feel I should finish this first. I guess I'm demotivated by the fact that there's so much work in it, and that the impact might not necessarily be big.

I plan on giving an 80 - 90% discount on there, by the way, for an on-prem version of Pull Dog (the regular service is managed).

    Disclaimer: Noah Kagan is a long time friend.

    I'd 100% go for it under 1 condition. That they either noindex your product page or they don't put your product name in the title of that page.

    I only see 2 downsides of going with AppSumo:

    1 -- Almost all of the customers they drive are price sensitive and have a mentality of "I want it as cheap as possible." If this customer archetype becomes your main customer base they may derail your vision for your product as they are a very vocal group. (Price sensitivity and vocalness is a dangerous combo for a new product).

    2 -- The other downside is that appsumo.com will very likely rank for your product name even possibly outrank you. If this happens they'll cannibalize your long term sales with lower value customers and charge you a fee to do it. The easily way to counteract this downside is to ask them to noindex your product page.

    I spent the last 6 months buying deals on App Sumo. I use a staging site and push all my updated code to the production server. This product makes a new server for each test. How does that create a benefit for your users? App sumo is great for getting feed back on your product. If you fix issues and improve your product over the duration of your sale people will stay with you and believe in your product. Yes people will B***H about the limits if they are bad. Example LMS course with 100 students- no one will buy this life time deal. If you dont do enough work when the refund period is about it expire you will get 50% refund rate because people only want to buy deals in companies with a future. So you will have to do weekly updates to show progress. You must offer support- if you have shitty support everyone in the community will know. Companies with bad support- & no roadmap- have no future. There is a whole industry of people who buy and resell deals- so, as an investor in the futures LTD market - what you are doing has to be good. There are a lot of agencies that resell deals so if you create an agency version of your product for $300 and allow users to sell so many accounts example 25 sub accounts then that can grow your user base and create a rev sharing concept for your business so you can focus on the development and allow the resellers to make up the cost from what they have paid. Appsumo is good for validating your product in a market. If it fails you will know 2 things- what people want and why they won't buy what you have- if you convince people to get behind you as a business owner and if you speak to the community on FB you can be successful. I know guys who run their own websites and are doing exactly what appsumo does they might be willing to help you create an offering that will be worth it and they charge less than app sumo does % of sales. Congratulations on making it this far in your business journey! It is not easy building software, markeitng, sales its hard work. GL!

      If you are alone, my product doesn't make sense to you. It's for teams of developers. A temporary test environment that lives as long as the pull request lives can be super helpful during code review of a pull request.

    Do you really have anything to lose though? The coupon system should be easy enough to punch through somehow. It can be handy in any case if you want to run promotions down the line.

    I'm not sure where your app is at. AppSumo customers are quite demanding for the low price that they pay. But if you currently sit at a handful of customers, they could also be the thing that take you from 10 to 100, 200 or 500 customers.

    I buy a lot of AppSumo deals. Just personally, I don't know if this would fit in with what I usually see on the site. Like you said, it's for developers. AppSumo buyers tend to be more general. But then again, maybe that's an advantage, because your product will stand out from what is on there!

      @dqmonn had a good point. I've got nothing to lose here (except maybe @nickreese's point), but I'm willing to make an attempt despite that.

      Marketing is one of those things I really hate, so I'll take anything that helps me get a slight boost.

    @ffMathy - I'd recommend searching AppSumo for developer-focused offerings like yours.

    See how many there are, number of reviews, etc.

    That info should help you decide if the platform has the right audience for your app/service.
