I built the fix
200+ days of Duolingo streak. Countless vocab words memorized. And I still completely froze the first time I tried to order coffee in Spanish, in person, for real.
That's the moment it clicked: matching words to pictures isn't the same skill as holding a conversation. Duolingo (and most language apps) are optimized for the thing that's easy to gamify — vocab recall — not the thing you actually need, which is being able to respond in real time to another person.
So I built Echoly. Instead of flashcards, you roleplay real scenarios — ordering food, asking for directions, a doctor's visit, or literally any topic you describe — with an AI that stays in character through the whole conversation and gives you a quick, gentle correction when your phrasing is off, instead of just flagging it wrong and moving on. Guided lessons, spaced-repetition review, and voice input if you want to practice actually speaking out loud, not just typing. 20 languages so far.
