I have a small opportunity starting today to focus some extra hours on my side projects. I have 2 weeks off work and my wife is away. I am at home looking after the kids.
Normally I spend my nights (from 8pm to 11pm) working on my side projects. That's about 21 hours a week give or take a few.
This fortnight, during school hours (8:30am to 3pm) I'll be home by myself give or take a few hours. So that's about 60 extra hours I can dedicate to my side projects over the next couple of weeks.
Today I'm planning out my calendar and figuring out what I would like to achieve with this extra time. Over the last couple of months, I've been working on a personal finance web app and I think I'll be able to at least launch the MVP.
Alternatively, I'm contemplating the idea of switching gears by building and launching something smaller. Maybe a small tool or tutorial website or something. I've already got experience building and launching things fairly quickly with my existing code base and build pipeline so I'm pretty confident I would pull this off. I have a couple of smaller ideas but I'm also open to suggestions.
Not sure if it's a good idea to take a break from the other project to work on something else or focus all my time on the bigger project. Either way, I'd be super happy to get something launched.
I realise 2 extra weeks isn't enough time to turn a side project into a sustainable business but at the same time I want to make the most of the extra time I've got.
What would you guys do with an extra 60 hours?
That's tough to say without knowing what your todo list looks like!
Are you hitting a wall with your big project? Maybe it's time for a change of pace.
Do you have a clear todo list with 60 worth hours of work? Stay focused!
Have you thought about maybe taking the time to improve this pipeline? It could pay you back indefinitely in time-saved when you're back to your normal schedule.
Also might just be a good opportunity to take some time off for yourself!
Thanks mate. Solid advice. After asking this on indie hackers I came to the realisation that just writing it down and starting to think it through was really helpful anyway.
I decided to stop worrying about how much extra time I've got and just focus on making a clear to-do list with reasonably sized tasks. I'll get however many done I can get done, relax and enjoy the process :)
I guess I was just getting a little worked up and excited from the change of pace. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter as long as I'm making progress in the right direction.
