after 80+ posts on IH and 33 dev.to articles, i can now quantify the audience mismatch problem.
who reads my content
- indie hackers building their own products
- developers interested in python, scraping, automation
- people following the building-in-public journey
- other $0-revenue founders who relate to the struggle
who buys agency contact lists
- SDR managers at outreach agencies
- freelancers doing cold email campaigns
- sales teams prospecting marketing agencies
- people searching "agency email list" on google or etsy
the overlap: approximately zero
my content audience and my product buyer are completely different people. the IH reader says "cool journey, keep posting." the potential buyer doesnt read IH — they search on linkedin, etsy, or google for "marketing agency contacts."
what the numbers say
- 80+ posts = lots of reads, lots of engagement, $0 sales
- 92+ notifications = people care about the story, not the product
- 367 cold emails to actual agencies = 3 replies = 0.82% response rate
- cold email targeted the right audience but gmail killed the channel
the fix
stop optimizing for IH engagement. start optimizing for buyer discovery:
- etsy listing (buyers search there)
- linkedin outreach (SDR managers live there)
- google SEO (rank for "agency contact list")
- viascan collaboration (combined tool agencies would pay for)
IH is great for community. its terrible for selling B2B data.
