Today I just had a call with a founder of a social media marketing agency. Talking to users is the thing everyone advises to do and I am all for it. However, the insights I got were not the most helpful.
The founder said the tools in the market are already good and have lots of funding so it'll be hard to compete - which is valid. I do believe that there is enough of the market to be able to make a profit though - a bet I am taking.
How should I take this feedback? I would like some community thoughts around this. Imagine if you received something similar. What are you thinking and what actions do you take?
My product is https://storycreatorapp.com/. The space I am targeting is social media. I am trying to conduct interviews with users so that I can figure out how to make content creation easier. Seems like there is room for another tool.
Thoughts?
I personally love the looks of this. It makes me think of 'canva for (social media) videos'.
I've personally not done videos partly because of the hassle I feel there is behind them, I looked into at one point but didn't get far. Who directly competes with you?
Is this a common response for interviews, or just the one?
Plus, is it this person's position to state whether you should go after a market? Should it not be more about whether he would use the service? Leave the decision whether to go after a market to you.
The social media space is huge, I believe there's plenty of room for 'little people' to exist.
Awesome. That is my goal to make it like Canva for video. I think they nailed the UX. https://promo.com/ looks pretty cool I have been studying them. From my research, the market lacks a good tool like Canva that is for video editing.
I guess a better example is the idea behind Story Creator is to take the best of After Effects, Photoshop, use the UX from Canva, and mix them together into one easy to-use-tool without all the complexity.
I am almost done with an MVP for all of that. I have a video renderer working. It's just a matter of tying it all together into a seamless workflow and ensuring the UX is solid.
What I am trying to figure out though is should I leave it there and really nail it. Or should I add another component? From what I have seen there is a demand for collaboration. There is a demand for analytics. I've worked in data analytics in San Francisco, it's like modern gold.
This is the type of intel I would like to uncover.
I guess the takeaway is DO USER INTERVIEWS, but TAKE THEM WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. The idea is to broaden the perspective and see if anyone is willing to pay for what you have. I don't think one interview should really ever discourage anyone. Keep moving forward.
I’d confirm with more users if they feel the same way. And try to understand more about the problems they face vs what your solution does. You only need to find one segment that has the problem and grow from there. Most likely this group will be small to start. So just focus on bring the best to that group vs all the rest...
As an example the idea I’m working on to rate and review warranties. I focsued on just a narrow segment that cares most about their stuff and making it last turns out to be camping gear folks. Some folks say general reviews take care of this but I found those who care specifically about the warranty. I think you can do the same.
Great feedback. Got similar advice from a buddy. Yeah, I think I need more conversations.
That's awesome you focused on a narrow segment and achieved results. Props dude.
