I just interviewed a billion dollar founder

Today on my podcast I published an hour long talk with Yahya Mokhtarzada, one of three brothers who co-founded Truebill, a fintech app that helps you do things like cancel credit card subscriptions and reduce common bills like cable and Internet.

They got acquired for $1.275 Billion late last year by Rocket Companies.

The cool takeaway I thought really relevant for indie hackers is the very start of the Truebill story.

They'd built 1.0 of the app, pretty basic, using Plaid to pull your bank account data and then find recurring payments you want to cancel.

The bit that surprised me was how they actually cancelled those subscriptions.

If a user clicked to cancel, on the backend it was completely manual. Yahya would jump on the phone and pretend to be the assistant to the person and get those subscriptions cancelled.

A very non-tech solution, hard to scale, but a way to test if people value a feature.
