I've been building financial templates for freelancers and self-employed professionals.
Last week I launched my first paid product on Gumroad — a Self-Employed Income & Tax Tracker PDF.
Revenue so far: $0.
But here's what I learned:
— Most freelancers don't track expenses at all
— Tax season is their #1 stress point
— Simple tools still sell if the problem is real
Now I'm figuring out how to get my first 10 customers.
Any advice from people who've been here?
Same $0 wall here until Sept 15 is a concrete send number, not a PDF tracker. Sept 15 Estimated-Tax Worksheet for 1099s, $19: YTD to SE to safe harbor vs annualized + payment log. https://atlashelpscompany.gumroad.com/l/zfdxar Not tax advice.
The “most freelancers don’t track expenses at all” point is exactly what I’m seeing too.
My guess is the issue is less “people don’t need tracking” and more “the capture step is too annoying.” If recording an expense takes even 30 seconds of app friction, people delay it and then forget.
I’m testing a WhatsApp-first tracker for this reason. Not trying to replace tax tools, just making the daily capture part easier.
I know a couple of indie founders who successfully launched their first digital product and have experience acquiring their initial 10+ paying customers. They might be willing to answer some of your questions for free, happy to forward them if you'd like.
