I launched a free tool to gain some traction and got zero response

Sharing good news is easy. Time to share some F-ups. I recently created a free tool that checks your Google Analytics setup. I thought it would be valuable for web analysts and SEO's: exactly my target audience.

I built it in a day and shared it on IH, some subreddits and PH. The result: absolutely nothing. No upvotes, no likes, nothing. Some new visitors, sure, but I expected much more.

Every failure can teach you something new, but in this case, I really don't know what went wrong. Anyways, let's quickly forget about it and move on.

I'd like to check it out. Post the link.

I tried it out and here's my feedback.

Overall this is a great tool. I think it should be marketed to anybody that does online marketing, builds websites or has their own website. This is actually my first time seeing a tool that checks your Google Analytics setup. I see a lot of SEO auditors (I built one myself, I took it down some time ago BTW).

Here's how I think you can improve it.

        • Add an overall score.
        • Check if events are being tracked. The fact that you're checking if goals are setup is superb.
        • Check if A/B split tests are setup.

In regards to not getting much traction on PH and other places, I've been there myself recently and would advise you to keep going. Trust me, this is a very good tool and an important one at that. The problem maybe that people are overlooking the importance of setting up Google Analytics properly. In my opinion, it's no less important than making sure you're website is mobile friendly or SEO friendly.

          Thanks, that's great feedback!

Are you absolutely sure that it's time to move on? Maybe your product is great and fills a need but doesn't have the right messaging, UX, or pitch. Have you had your landing page reviewed/critiqued?

If you still think your product is useful, maybe it's time to spend time on the marketing side of things.

I see your point. The tool I launched is just a small part of a larger offering (SiteGuru.co). I hoped to use that tool to gain some additional traction. Well, that didn't happen.

SiteGuru itself is doing great. But you're right, if this was the main tool, I'd be shutting it down based on the initial lack of traction:-)

A day isn't too bad. Did you measure where in the funnel users dropped off? I use GA and personally, I dropped off the moment you asked me to connect my Google account. I was not sure what I was getting in return for sharing my data. You explain it in the text, but a screenshot of what the outcome of a check looks like would have potentially won me over.

Agree, a day isn't that bad, it's just that I'm wondering why it didn't take off in the SEO / Online Marketing channels.

Once on the page, hardly anyone drops off. Most people complete the 3 step process and seem to value the report.
