I launched my WordPress plugin a few weeks ago and while we are getting some downloads, I am struggling to get anyone to leave a star rating or review. I’d really appreciate honest feedback from people who have grown plugins on the WP.org repository.
The plugin is called Conversion.Business Gamified CAPTCHA. It helps site owners stop spam and bot attacks without forcing users to solve annoying traffic light puzzles.
The core problem: Traditional CAPTCHAs frustrate real humans and destroy WooCommerce checkout conversion rates.
What the plugin does:
Replaces image puzzles with 2-5 second HTML5 micro-games
Integrates natively with WooCommerce, Contact Form 7, and Elementor
Blocks bots using zero-telemetry Proof-of-Work (fully GDPR compliant)
Includes a Live Preview sandbox so users can test it instantly
What I’ve tried so far:
Reaching out in WooCommerce Facebook groups
Posting in WordPress subreddits
Launching an interactive "Live Preview" so people can try it before installing
Adding a polite banner in the admin dashboard asking for a review
Problem: People are downloading it, but we are getting absolutely no reviews or stars, which is completely killing our organic ranking in the WordPress plugin directory.
I’m not asking for fake reviews or sympathy stars. I want blunt feedback:
Is the onboarding flow or "Live Preview" confusing?
Are we failing to "ask" for the review at the right moment?
Is the concept of a "gamified CAPTCHA" just too novel for the average WP admin?
How did you get your first 10 organic 5-star reviews on the WP repository?
Should we be pushing the "Privacy/GDPR" angle harder than the "Conversion/Sales" angle?

I’m open to criticism. I just want to understand what I’m missing in the WordPress ecosystem.
I’m going through something pretty similar right now. I recently got my first WooCommerce plugin approved on WordPress, and honestly getting it approved feels like the easy part compared to getting people to actually discover and install it.
One thing I’m learning is that I wouldn’t optimize for reviews yet. I’d optimize for getting the first handful of real users and actually watching where they get stuck. If the onboarding has friction, more traffic probably just means more people abandoning it.
I’d also make the value obvious before asking someone to install anything. Looking at your positioning, I’d want to understand within a few seconds why I should replace the CAPTCHA I already use with yours.
Curious - are you getting installs but no reviews, or are you struggling to get the installs in the first place?
Zero reviews after launch usually means the onboarding/positioning isn't meeting people where they already describe the pain — not necessarily that the plugin is bad.
Curious: are you only improving the product page, or also looking for places where site owners complain about spam/CAPTCHA friction in public?
I built a scored thread digest for that kind of hunt. If useful, I can map a sample for your niche on a short call — or send one if you drop a one-liner + a few target communities.
