I launched a Product on Product Hunt and It Failed. Here are the lessons I learned.

Early this week I launched Flowscriipt Components on Product Hunt, with hopes it will drive more visitors to the site.

Outcome

  • 100 Visitors
  • 1 sign-up
  • no sale :)

Before I tell you why it failed, here's some background.

Background

Flowscriipt is a tool I've been building for the past month and a half now to help Webflow developers add functionalities to Webflow without code.

Started it as a project to scratch my itch, and also help Webflow developers who want to save time without worrying about code or bugs do the same.

After several conversations, social media posts (Twitter, Reddit, tik tok, Facebook, Youtube, LinkedIn, Webflow communities, etc)

The idea was validated

  • 3 sales
  • 10 Waitlist members (over 25 people requested to join)
  • 80+ Newsletter subscribers

With this, I also Launched a new tool. ChatGPT Prompts for Webflow with 100+ Tested prompts for Webflow developers.

  • 70+ Upvotes
  • 1000+ Visitors

So my plan was to launch another tool to market flowscriipt. Flowscriipt Components: Functional and customizable components without code, just copy and paste, and it failed.

Here's why it failed.

  1. Not enough marketing effort:
I didn't have enough time to handle marketing as well as building the product

  2. Spent so much time building than marketing.
Feel bad saying but I spent way too much time building this in my room than people knowing about it.

  3. Tight deadline & rushed:
I had 3+ days to get this done and launch :( which in turn affected marketing

  4. Might not be solving a deep problem.
There's a possibility the components might not be addressing a pressing problem within Webflow developers

Here are the lessons I learned

  1. Invest in Marketing: Building a great product is only part of the equation; getting it in front of the right audience is more important.

  2. Plan Ahead:
Don't rush like me, Take the time to plan Pre-launch marketing, and teasers, and build anticipation.

  3. Problem Validation:
Ensure that the problem you're solving is genuinely important to your target audience. This is where listening more to customers comes in.

  4. Learn from Others and Previous Success:
Though I took note of what has worked with previous Launches and others too, but made the mistake of not replicating/implementing them.

Yeah that's it, I'm still building flowscriipt mostly at night aside from my full-time job, learning from customers as well as feedback from others

What advice would you give? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Me too! But I'm even worse off than you, with just two upvote.😂

    1. 1

😅😅 We'll get better with our next launch

I am launching soon on product hunt.
Do you have any pointer on what would you do for Pre-launch marketing and teasers for next launch?

    1. 1

Hey Parul, have you launched yet?
Sorry for the delay, still new to indie hackers.

My advice would be to share a lot of demo videos, and some good UI images of your product 2-4 weeks before your launch.

Talk about the problem, the solution and how your product makes it way better

  3. 2

Rarely do we hear about unsuccessful product launches.

How long would you have marketed on Product Hunt for if you could do it all over again?

    1. 1

True many don't share, for my next launch would spend 2-4 weeks marketing before launching it

  4. 2

Thanks for sharing ... how did you make your PH visuals?

    1. 1

Mostly use figma, and take some screen shots from my product.

also check out shots.so used it a lot too

Hi Manuel, thanks for sharing! Really appreciate when people share stories of their failures instead of just sharing about successes because there is so much everyone can learn from each other's failures too!
I was just wondering what would you say is your best way of reaching out to customers and really validating the problem you are trying to solve?

    1. 1

Thank you Silas, what I've learned from reaching to customer that has worked has been cold email as well as posting demo videos of what the product is solving.

Trying to show it than tell them. Hopefully this helps you
