I launched Controol solo. No ads, no audience. We hit Top 5 on Product Hunt.
Four months ago I started building Controol because I was tired of feeling anxious every time I spent money — even when I could afford it.
Most budgeting tools made me feel guilty instead of clear. I wanted the opposite.
So I built something around a simple idea:
Know what you can spend, not what you already did.
No team.
No pre-launch email list.
No ad spend.
Just shipping a solution to my own pain.
Yesterday I launched it on Product Hunt... and it reached the Top 5 of the day.
The feedback has been incredible. People resonate with the mindset shift.
If you're building something and wondering if it’s even worth launching without a following — this is your sign. Do it anyway. You don’t need perfect conditions to start.

Start small
Validate fast
Talk to people
Don’t overthink it — just build and improve

That's an interesting approach to personal finance app! For me, such personal finance app never really worked for me because I find it a hassle to enter my expenses daily and sometimes, I forget to key them in, and the numbers start to go haywire. Maybe you could find a solution for that?

But with Controol, that’s not really the main focus.
You don’t need to track every single expense. Just adding a rough total at the end of your day is more than enough.
Why? Because the app is built around knowing how much you can spend, not obsessing over how much you already did.

Honestly, here’s what worked for me with the MVP:
Keep the core idea super clear. Controol wasn’t trying to do everything — just help people know how much they can safely spend.
Simplify the UX as much as possible. One main screen, zero friction, no fancy dashboards.
Launch fast, explain with clarity. I shared the story behind why I built it and not just what it does.
Also… being active on launch day helped! I engaged with every comment and tried to genuinely connect. Product Hunt loves human stories, not just features.

I've never used personal finance apps before, but your post really caught my attention and inspired me. I'd love to try your app. If it works as described, it sounds like a huge success. However, I had some trouble figuring out how to get the app - I couldn't find it on popular platforms like the App Store or Google Play. Additionally, when I tried to sign up through the website on mobile (I’m using Safari), some pages and icons didn’t load properly. Any advice on how I can get started?

Right now, Controol is a web app, so it’s not on the App Store or Google Play yet.
But you can use it on mobile by going to https://controol.app, and if you’re on iOS, you can even add it to your home screen as a PWA for a more app-like experience.
It’s actually the first time someone reports issues like that — the web app usually works smoothly 🫶
Still, I’ll double-check things on Safari just in case.
Additionally, I've been using Firefox as my default browser for quite some time, but it takes forever to load. When I tried a different browser, it worked fine. It's not practical to keep it on my home screen since every time I want to use it, it redirects to Firefox and the same issue occurs.

It seems like Firefox is struggling with how it handles PWAs or web apps from the home screen. I’ll dig into this and see if there’s anything I can optimize on my end.
In the meantime, if you're okay switching the default browser temporarily to Chrome or Safari, the PWA works much smoother that way. Really appreciate you sharing this!

Honestly, the hardest part of building Controol solo wasn’t technical… it was staying confident when no one was watching.
No one to bounce ideas off. No users yet. Just me, second-guessing every detail.
Shipping without external validation is hard — but also what makes it meaningful.

Here’s how I kept costs low:
Used free tiers from tools like Supabase
Designed and coded everything myself
Focused on solving the core problem first
My advice: launch with the basics, validate the idea, and improve as you go. The value matters more than the polish at the start.
