I launched SpearMatch on ProductHunt today

As an immigrant mom who went through the US college system as an outsider, helping my son navigate college admissions was eye opening. The students who got real guidance were the ones whose families could afford $150 to $300 an hour for a private counselor. Everyone else was guessing.

I have spent 20 years in software engineering solving data problems at Amazon and American Express. So I built the tool I wish we had.

SpearMatch gives every student a personalized college list based on their actual profile, including academics, test scores, and priorities. It tells you why each school is a fit, and what steps you can take to move a reach school to a target. Free, always, no paywalls.

Launched last week. ProductHunt is today.

Would love your support and any honest feedback from the IH community.

This is a strong problem because college admissions guidance is both expensive and emotionally stressful.

The part I’d lean into harder is not just “personalized college list.” A lot of tools can claim that now.

    The stronger promise is probably:

“Understand which colleges actually fit your profile, why they fit, and what would make a reach school more realistic.”

That last part is important because it turns SpearMatch from a recommendation tool into a decision-support tool for families who cannot afford private counseling.

For Product Hunt and early distribution, I’d probably not chase a broad student audience first. I’d focus on parents, immigrant families, school counselors, and college-prep communities where the pain is already active.

The trust layer matters a lot here too. Families need to feel the tool is explaining the reasoning, not just giving them a mysterious AI-generated list.

Happy to put a tighter version in writing if useful. The main thing I’d map is the landing page message, first audience to target, and the Product Hunt follow-up angle.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I liked your version of the promise "Understand which colleges actually fit your profile, why they fit, and what would make a reach school more realistic". This is the real differentiator from other tools and I am not leaning into it hard enough. Would love your help tightening the landing page message and the target audience framing. Immigrant families and school counselors are the audience I built this for. Would genuinely appreciate a sharper version if you are up for it.

Yes, that’s exactly the part worth tightening.

If immigrant families and school counselors are the real audience, the message has to build trust fast. Otherwise SpearMatch can look like another AI college-list tool instead of a decision-support layer for families who need explainable guidance.

Drop your email and I’ll send over the tighter version. It’ll be easier to make useful in writing than turning this into a full landing page teardown here.

Also it is not an AI college-list tool.

            Just sent you a note.

Kept it focused on making SpearMatch understood as explainable college-fit guidance for immigrant families and counselors, not as another generic college-list tool.
