I’m building a social app that deliberately makes communication slower

Most social apps are designed around speed.

Swipe faster.
Match faster.
Reply faster.
Meet more people.

I started wondering: what if speed is actually part of the problem?

I’ve always liked the idea of having a pen pal. There’s something interesting about writing to someone you don’t know, taking your time to think, and then waiting for their reply.

But traditional pen pals are difficult to start.

You need to find someone with similar interests, exchange contact information, and hope the conversation actually continues.

So I started building SlowInk, a mobile app built around digital letters and pen pals.

The core idea is simple:

Instead of trying to meet as many people as possible, help you get to know a few people more deeply.

You can discover people from different countries, write letters, collect stamps, and keep memories through things like time capsules.

But building it has made me realize something:

The hardest part isn't building the letter system.

It's creating enough opportunities for two strangers to actually want to write back to each other.

A beautiful UI doesn't matter if nobody replies.

A clever matching algorithm doesn't matter if the first letter feels awkward.

And having users doesn't necessarily mean you have a community.

Right now, I'm still very early.

I'm experimenting with onboarding, matching, first-letter prompts, public letters, rewards, and ways to make waiting for a reply feel less like waiting.

I'm also learning how difficult it is to build a social product from zero, especially as an indie developer.
