Building an ecommerce tool creates a strange problem:
almost every idea sounds useful.
Profit calculations.
Fee templates.
Pricing comparisons.
Inventory scenarios.
Competitor tracking.
Sensitivity analysis.
It’s very easy to keep adding things.
But recently I’ve started asking a different question:
Does this feature actually help a seller make a decision?
If the answer is only:
“It gives the user more information,”
I’m starting to think that isn’t enough.
For ZYONE, I’m trying to separate features into two groups:
Nice to know
Interesting numbers, reports, or extra data.
Helps me decide
Should I raise the price?
Should I keep advertising?
Should I reorder?
Should I stop scaling this product?
I want to spend more time on the second group.
It also means some ideas I like may never make it into the product.
That’s probably a good thing.
For other founders:
How do you decide whether a feature is genuinely useful or just “nice to have”?
That question, “does this help a seller make a decision?”, is a useful filter. I’ve caught myself shipping reports that add information but don’t change the next action. One thing that helped was writing the decision the feature is supposed to support before building the UI. If I can’t finish that sentence, it usually goes back in the backlog.
