As a foodie and also doing some weight lifting I decided to make easy and simple searchable food nutrition database to get my macros right, but more for look up on the go when needed.
Site: https://whatfood.org
Any feedback is very welcome.
I like it, I actually started something similiar years ago but I was focused caloric density. I would suggest an autocomplete for the search but beyond that I like that it is clearly focused and simple. If you are looking to add more features, I would love to be able to search by micro-nutrients so I can see what foods have the highest concentration of what I'm missing.
Actually that is my plan to make an advanced search. My initial plan was to make searchable database where I can sort foods by carbs for low fat / low carb / high protein foods.
Can you tell me more about your project, how far you went with it?
I didn't get very far, I downloaded some public food .csv or .xls file into a MySQL database (it looks identical to yours based on the results) but never put a frontend on it. I actually had two different people come up to me recently and ask about making a similar app (again focused on micro nutrients).
What are your plans for this app?
This is actually minified version of a project Im building. There is a lot of stuff prepped behind it.
This database will work as API for the main project, so I decided to make it public.
I can't figure out how to gain traction to this database, if there will be demand for this I can see myself working on this further.
You mentioned people are asking to you to build. You code for a living? Freelance or job?
Maybe you can gain traction on bodybuilder forums and groups, sport niches too. They need to know various details for their diets. Also for weight loss niches would be interesting. You could combine receipts and nutrition plans for gaining weight or weight loss, entire biweekly plans or something.
Yeah I'm a software guy, I'm mostly building products at the moment. Quit my job a few years ago and got lucky with one successful product (after two failures). Feel free to email me (won't let me post the full email apparently): kai@referazon.
Oh.. that's nice. Do you have a twitter too?
I do but I almost never use it
Hey there,
first of all, great job.
For feedback, I've found that searching is too broad (in my opinion), like when you search for " - yes, quotation, it resolves 100 pages (pagination is quite huge). Also those bars about fats, carbs & proteins are unclear. At least for me :p
Another thing, some accounts would be nice, so you would have a way to set some specific amount of calories, fats, carbs and so on, and in search results those food propositions could be somewhow sorted, or adjusted to your needs.
Thank you for feedback. I definitely will work on this search bug. Bars about macros are meant to be - full bar is 100% of calories. If food is 100 kcal and has 10 grams of carbs 10 g x 4 calories per gram = 40% of filled bar. All bars together is full bar. I think it doesn't make sense, if I need to explain that. Maybe I should make a one pie chart instead.
Cool stuff! Minor feedback on search: I searched "pasta" and had to scroll down a bit to find it, after all sorts of "pastes". So you may want to work on the search prioritization a bit. How did you get the data? Are you using an API? If not, the product may be the API for all the fitness apps out there.
As I said in other comment, there is a lot of other stuff and actually there is multiple languages under the hood, so search is confusing a lot of things. So I need indeed fine tune search the algo.
Thank you for feedback.
