This summer, while working in public places, I found myself getting distracted by people's conversations and other noise. I tried many ambient noise apps and white noise YouTube videos, but didn't like them very much, so I built my own tiny app that plays brown noise (a smoother version of white noise). I ended up using it daily, and decided to publish it on App Store because it seemed to solve a real problem.
Previously I always got stuck in the loop of perfecting and not shipping, so this time I told myself I'll just wing it. I made up the simplest possible name – Brown Noise, drew screenshots in Keynote, and released the app within a couple of days. I made it free because people probably wouldn't download a paid app with no reviews. I also published it on Product Hunt (https://www.producthunt.com/posts/brown-noise), but only got 70 upvotes.
Then I got busy and forgot about it.
Fast forward 2 months, I was randomly browsing my analytics and decided to check Brown Noise, and saw that 2 months later (!!) people were still using it!
Here's the retention over the entire time:
I also got 10 reviews, all of them 5-star. You can see seven of them (US) here: https://apps.apple.com/app/brown-noise/id1519712394.
I'm so happy I created something that is useful and solves a real problem! I don't have many users yet, but early metrics look great. Really excited to now market and improve the app.
Thanks for reading!
Haha that's awesome! And so relatable! The same thing happened to me. Built something, forgot about it for a few years and one day checked to find it had 50k users!
Best of luck marketing, and monitising the app!
Wow, what did you build? :0
Thank you!
Cool! I built a wallpaper app, back in 2016 and forgot about it - checked my appstore connect to find out that it had about 1500 weekly downloads for a while with 5k users using it semi regularly for a bit.
I'm more of a blue noise guy(didn't know that was a thing until I read your post.) - have you thought about doing something including that?
Haha always check your analytics :D
I just listened to some blue noise on YT and it's pretty similar to what Brown Noise has
Great app idea! Going to download it and check it out :)
Oh thank you, hope it'll be useful to you!
Congrats! This is an awesome encouragement.
Congrats!
Any idea how you are going to monetize it?
I've made it paid for some time and got sales and a good conversion rate, but traffic was low (just App Store), so I'm trying to see how to market it now
Congrats! Hope it continues!
Thanks! Retention seems stable :)
That's cool. Keep it up!
Thank you!
How did you measure the retention / usage?
Analytics solution?
Amplitude, unbounded retention.
