I made my first 500$ with a 'pay-what-you-want' product, thanks to Reddit
Hey,
I recently reached a first significant milestone (for me) as the app crossed 500$ in total sales. You can see a details report here on my Twitter.
I launched GPcalendarApp.com 7 months ago on Reddit (r/formula1) and I leverage the niche audience subreddit with a 'pay-what-you-want' pricing strategy.
As we know, the Reddit community can be very harsh when you show them a paying product/app.
So this was I went with a kinda free product (0$ or more) and mainly asked for feedback and how to improve the app.
This worked pretty well, my post ranked #1 for a whole week and receive a lot of upvotes and very good feedback.
I also received nice ratings on the landing pages so it helped for future conversions.
Only 5 months later I turned the app into a paid app.
TLDR: leverage Reddit community by offering them a free product first.

Did the subreddit really let you self-promote? I've written a bit of freeware, and I've discovered even replying to a post where someone asks for such a tool is enough to get a stern talking-to from moderators. I've moved on from reddit, but maybe I'm just doing it wrong.
Yes, it allows me to do so. Reddit is very sensitive about self-promotion indeed. You may need to interact a lot on the subreddit (or elsewhere) to be seen as a real person and not a spammy one.

Looking to start using Reddit for promo, but it's daunting for sure. Glad to see the good results!
I think the approach has to be community driven rather than pure promo as we would do on another platform.

I don't think so. But it could be a Discord server yeah. Why so?
