I made my first little SaaS product!

https://app.streettalk.io/

After a couple months of learning and hacking things together, you may all now search across earning call transcripts to your hearts' content. I hope you find this useful, feel free to leave feedback!

I'm a little confused, what exactly does this app do?

    1. 1

No offense but I was wondering the same :D

    2. 1

Enter a phrase into the search bar and it will search a database of 60,000 earning call transcripts for the exact phrase.

      1. 1

What is a "earning call transcript" by the way ?

        1. 1

i think this is mainly in the US and UK, but publicly-traded companies hold a phone conference 4 times a year to discuss their earnings that quarter and any events that may be useful to investors. It starts with typically the CFO and either the CEO or COO going over the quarter's performance and any affecting market conditions and then there's a question and answer session with equity research analysts.

Thanks for the clarification. It is a lot of valuable info there. Some of it can go to the landing page and then be a hint to the people about how they can use the product. Or do you expect people landing there will already know what it is?

      2. 1

I see. Where are you getting these call transcripts? Didn't even know a database like this existed.

        1. 2

Ah, trade secrets :) there are databases that have this information, but I do some things to make searching for phrases a bit faster.

  2. 2

Nice little app! It's great to see how you can stitch together a fully functioning app after just a few months.

Congrats. Here's some immediate thoughts I had after using it.

    A few feature requests

    • Give me an option to rank the results (date, company, company market cap etc.)
    • Summary stats on the search above results ('XXX appeared in YYY calls at ZZZ companies')

    Product enhancements

    • Pro feature: Alerts for events (specific phrases are mentioned etc.)

    Marketing

    • Produce a few slides with a report by company, search term and impact (e.g. TSLA increased mentions of China 2Qs before announcing office there)
    • Reports with some marketing spin work for a viral spin

    Keep it up!

    1. 1

      You're so helpful, thank you!

      1. 1

        no worries! happy to help

  3. 2

Good for you man, good luck.
    How can we help?

    1. 1

Thanks so much for asking! If this is useful to you, it would be awesome if you left some feedback. If it's not but it should, please leave feedback about why, and if it's not but you know someone for whom it would be feel free to share :)

Cool idea! great to see a working version of it and search is fast :) Just curious to know, who are your target audience?

    1. 1

That's a great question. I struggled identifying that at the beginning so I decided to launch and see who we pick up along the way.

      1. 2

release it out, and you'll surprised to know who ends up using it more. Ofc stats and analytics could help as well. But for now just focus on iterating fast ;)

  5. 2

Thanks for creating the search function for earning call transcripts! Curious to try this out in some of my trade research workflows

    1. 2

Thank you! Let me know if there's anything you're missing here.

  6. 1

    Very useful. Cool idea.

  7. 1

Please share some notes about the process that would help me a lot.

    Hi,
issues report. After few seconds there is a survey pop-up. It will not go away regardless.
usage: interesting for market and competition research. For whom? marketing people.
On these calls I am interested in searching for ESG related themes: strategies, metrics,, OKRs.
    cheers!

    1. 1

yea the survey popup was intentional but clearly a bad idea. I will remove it altogether.

Interesting point on ESG, if there were topics (e.g., list all calls with ESG discussed), would that be interesting to you?

Did you like the lack of a "search" button with the results just coming at you as you search, or would you prefer a dedicated search button?

  9. 1

Sorry what problem does it solve ? How am I suppose to use this ?

    1. 1

It has a single search bar on the page. If you type a phrase into the search bar, it will search earning call transcripts for 60,000 earning calls. It's useful for people who do equity research or trading analysis based on what company directors are saying.

      1. 1

Sure ! My trade services give these reports or points to note as a separate document itself. But sure - looks promising- add more different set of data points and take this further. All the best

        1. 1

What sort of data points would be useful to you? Any functionality you'd like to see?

  10. 1

    what does it do?

Btw: I've also build my 2nd saas: https://analogenie.com

    1. 1

Love to see the AI usage :) did you use GPT-3?

My app searches through earning call transcripts for an exact match, given your choice of search query that you type in the search bar.

  11. 1

I really want to see the results but seems to hang when I try to search something.

    1. 1

I don't have an empty state, most of the time if nothing is returning it means that nothing matched your search query

  12. 1

The app works great. Just a question, is it a good practice to make request on each typed letter? Totally a newbie here 😁😁

    1. 2

I like the UX of not hitting a button to search and my server can handle it. Maybe it has to change in the future but at least for now it works.

  13. 1

Thanks for putting this together, cool idea. Two comments:

    1. Does that search engine also crawl ADR transcripts? I tried to look for 'Hello Group' and its investment in Tantan, but couldnt find anything.
    2. When i type something, it takes some time to load, which is ok, but without knowing this it would appear to be frozen. Maybe add an animation of some sort indicating its searching to avoid people mistaking it for being frozen and dropping off.
    1. 1

Also what is ADR? I don't have all the transcripts but I am very interested in covering niches

      1. 1

"american depository receipt", non-US stocks like CHinese stocks, which underlie less stringent reporting rules. For exmaple Tencent Music, Hello Group, Alibaba etc

        1. 1

thank you, I will take a look! Do you have an example ticker that you'd like to see? I can search for it in my database directly (the frontend currently only supports statement phrase search)

Update: I looked for TME (Tencent/NYSE) and I should be able to get calls for them soon.

          1. 1

            Awesome. Thanks a bunch.

    2. 1

Thanks for the feedback. I put it down in the TODOs for the next release!

  14. 1

Are you using AWS as a deployment platform?

    1. 1

      I am using DigitalOcean.

      1. 1

Is it app platform I believe?

  15. 1

    A very cool idea.

  16. 1

    Can you share your process:
How did you come up with the idea ?
How did you validate the idea ?

    1. 1

In a few iterations depending on the outcome I will share some notes about the process!
