I made my SaaS completely free — here's why

I built LintPage after a noindex tag sat in our production site for 47 days without anyone noticing. 90% of organic traffic, gone. By the time we found it, we'd lost 47 days of rankings that took months to recover.

So I built a tool that scans any website for SEO disasters before you deploy. 45+ checks across SEO, accessibility, performance, security, and structured data. Takes about 30 seconds.

I originally launched it as freemium, free tier with 13 checks, $19/mo Pro with all 45+. But I had zero audience, zero following, zero trust. Charging from day one when nobody knows you exist is a losing game.

So I flipped the model: everything is free now. No paid tier, no signup required, no limits. The product is the marketing.

The plan is simple:

- Give away the full tool to build usage and trust

- Capture emails through scan reports ("get this report emailed to you")

- Build an email list of people who actually use the tool

- Introduce a paid tier later (month 6+) for power features like automated weekly scans, team workspaces, and Slack alerts

Right now I'm focused on distribution: free SEO tools that rank on Google, blog content, CLI installs via npm, and showing up in places like this.

No revenue yet. $0 MRR. Just a working product and a bet that giving it away builds something worth charging for later.

Would love feedback from anyone who's done the free-first approach. Did it work? When did you flip the switch to paid?
