I made this #buildinpublic heat map

🌎 Where are all the indie hackers located?

I made a heatmap from a dataset of 10k active Twitter users, related to the #buildinpublic hashtag.
The location is just based on the location tag (~60% of users have it set correctly)

Pretty col map! Expected more IHers from Eastern European countries and China.

Yeah, this is the tightly-knit twitter community - probably Chinese IHers are less connected / not on Twitter as much

    This is something amazing dude!

I think this is really cool and helpful, someone can relate when doing other kind of researchers.

This is so cool! Well done!
Can I get an icon for Dublin?

Thanks, I'll push a update at some point and will be sure to include Dublin :)

Looks like the most indie hackers on right now are in San Francisco. How's the city there for the indie hacker scene.

I was recently out there and didn't really vibe with the city. I'm from the east coast, but SF just didn't really charm me. I thought it was hard to navigate as well. I'm surprised too that the rent is so high there and there are plenty of people willing to pay obscene prices for rent there.

Maybe it's just because I'm an east coaster, but the place felt overhyped to me. But maybe the indie scene there is great, and that's an underrates aspect of living there.

    Cool.
Which tools did you use to achieve this?

The Twitter API for data collection, and Python with Pandas + Folium to make the Heatmap. Folium even generates the HTML :)

        Appreciate the reply.

Never used Folium, will check it out.

This is really cool! How did you come up with the idea?

Thanks! I was actually looking for local indie hackers on Twitter, as most of my things are country specific. The approach was to do some data scraping and wrangling and filter on location :)
