I’ve always been amazed by how short life is.
But the thing is, it’s so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, work, deadlines, chores, and forget that time is slipping by.
So I made this little thing: https://www.lifeisshort.fyi/ (free). It shows
How much time do I have left → Motivate me to actually focus on important things, since my time here is limited
When others started something big in their lives → Remind me that I’m not late. Some people start early. Others start late. We’re all on different timelines, and that’s okay.
This idea had been stuck in my head for ages, and I finally managed to build it (it’s still pretty early stage)
Hope it helps someone out there too :)
P.S. I set this as my default Chrome tab to remind me daily
sometimes negative words bring the most profound positive thought changes.
Indeed
this is both cool and depressing 🥲
Got some comments like that too :) the goal is to motivate us to actually do the work
Cool Idea, unique
This genuinely moved me. It’s so easy to get lost in the rush of doing more, chasing deadlines, and forgetting that time is quietly passing us by. What you built isn’t just a tool — it’s a wake-up call. I set it as my new tab too. Every glance reminds me to pause, realign, and focus on what truly matters. Thank you for turning a personal reflection into something that will stay with so many of us. You made a difference today.
I loved the concept of the application but presenting it as a Death Calendar is definitely not the best idea, it gives a negative first impression although making people aware about the opportunities they have considering their age is a pretty amazing concept so present it more positively.
Thanks :)
That's a bit scary but I really like the blue dots reference, I am soon Galileo Age !!!
Very scary
I was shocked 😲
Just a small suggestion, maybe estimate life expectancy, taking a couple of broad parameters (country, income group). Inputting life expectancy seems a little arbitrary, that's all.
When I set my birthdate as 01/01/0001, it died. How fitting😄
I'm just 20 years old my self honestly, But I am no big fan of calendars, I rather have a to do list for the week , and a smaller to do list for they day, keeping things scheduled but for short term.
Long term plans don't always work, because life changes alot, the circumstances, events and the resources you have, the future isn't always predictable in my opinion.
But still a great way to look at life!
This is exactly the kind of reminder I needed 😂 If you're on Indie Hacker, then your dreams have much shorter time left. After age 30-40, things start slowing down...
Hey Austin, this is super cool. Your landing page is clear but I think a few small tweaks could boost signups. I’m a beginner copywriter and I’m practicing by helping startups for free in exchange for testimonials. Want me to give you a few suggestions?
A physical product that would replicate this would be insanely hard-hitting!
This hits hard… amazing reality check of an idea.
There was a reason why some people kept skulls on their desks.. "memento mori"... I think this page is even better! It hits hard, but thanks for creating it! Today I set this page as one of the start pages in my browser. It is brutal, but at the same time, so helpful.
I am pretty sure this got mentioned in some podcast I can't remember the name of but I like the angle and the name. It's heavy and that's exactly the point. The fact that it's heavy may be the exact reason people will start interacting with it (I don't know anything about marketing just my opinion)
Thanks! Wanted to create something like this for a while.
Umm it's great and heavy at the same time.
there is someone i saw on youtube named elizabeth philips or something, she used to have something like this. then i thought i would create a daily reminder tool, the moment i visualize it, i went in instant overhwleming anxiety and what not. idk if im ready for this..
This is cool and somewhat off.
So I started this tool brand where I enlighten people about tools and what they can use it for in a storytelling format.
I noticed many founders do not have what it takes to do this for themselves. Moreover, tools get validated when recommendation comes from an external.
Now, I’m on the edge, do I share this with people?
That's super cool, thanks!
So brave
Life is beautiful, don't waste your precious time and live it like it should be
This is an amazing tool to spread awareness, we don't live forever
I love this! We all need to be reminded that we're going to die.
Every once in a while I remind my daughters of this, not to be morbid, but so they know you only get one chance at life.
YOLO!
This looks great. I'm using it!
I’d like to keep the expectancy at 60 to push myself harder.
Is it possible to change the 80 to 60?
Go to Developer Tools, in Application tab, just clear site data or manually edit lifeCalendarData in Local storage. It hit me hard with sadness when I set it to 60... I moved it back to 80 ;) edit: oh, in the top-left corner there is an arrow that takes you back to the setup.. no need for "hacking" ;)
Awesome! Given it's about adding perspective, if I could make a suggestion, it would be to toggle key dates on to see how many you have left. This could be X amount of birthdays left, X amount of days until you plan to retire (so we can be grateful for our work while it's here!), How many holidays do you have, such as Christmas?
Seeing the squares of how much time we have left brings a lot of perspective, but seeing many less dots for key dates is "wow"
Thanks for sharing! I will definitely bring this up with others in my networking groups :)
This is a great idea! will consider adding these features
Love the simplicity and message here, Austin. Time really is the only currency we don’t get back.
I’ve also been using SmythOS to build AI agents without code. It’s helped me automate a ton of tasks and free up time for things that actually matter.
Tools like yours are great reminders to live more intentionally. Respect 🙌
It should also help realise that death is not the opposite of life. Death is the opposite of birth, which is easier to accept
Whoa, that's... intense. Realizing that over 1/4 of your life is already behind you, and that you've only spent it on school and college. Definitely a way to focus on the present, I guess. I hope you're doing well.
I like to see this as a reminder that in the grand scope of things, all of our struggles and problems are really meaningless.
Yes, on the grand scale of the universe, our problems may seem small
I have to say that it shocked me to realise that I already lived 30% of my life, and I am only 27! Kudos on this app, any plans/ideas on how to evolve it further?
Yes, I'm considering an chrome extension for this :)
Very entertaining – or disappointing how little I've done to this day...
It's a trick of the tail that folks born tomorrow are disqualified.
neat but kinda excessive aicountdown.com
