Hey Indie Hackers π
Quick post for anyone considering the same move. Not selling anything β just sharing the truth because I would have killed for an honest post like this 6 months ago.
Context: I'm a Data Engineer at a tech company by day, and a solo indie founder by night. I built PickifyAI (hence the account name!) β but over the last 2 years I've also been building BeTeam, a private sports prediction game for friend groups (beteamapp.com if curious). I recently migrated BeTeam from Bubble.io to React Native + NestJS + Postgres β that migration is what this post is about.
The numbers, all annual:
Platform & Wrapper Subscriptions:
Infrastructure (API, Server, DB):
Claude Subscription:
Real apples-to-apples: $650/yr in platform fees β $0/yr. The ~$180/yr infrastructure cost is a scale-driven line item that would have come due in either world β Bubble would have hit the same paid-tier threshold at the same user count. The migration didn't add infrastructure costs; growth did.
What broke me on Bubble
Honestly, cognitive load. Bubble is "no-code" but the friction, plugin limitations, and manual effort to polish a mobile UX became unsustainable as a side project. Every customization required wrestling the platform. Every edge case needed an awkward workaround.
I wasn't quitting Bubble because it didn't work β I was quitting because the friction was eating my evenings. I build apps for fun, and Bubble had stopped being fun.
The AI-augmented rebuild
I'm a Claude power user from my day job, so I knew how to prompt it, how to architect with it, and what its actual capabilities are.
Going in I assumed the rebuild would take 4-6 weeks of evenings. Reality: 3-4 days for a fully functional native app.
The coding wasn't the bottleneck. Claude does that fast when you know how to prompt. The bottleneck was remembering all the micro-features I'd built into Bubble over 2 years. Every tiny edge case, every UX choice, every "oh wait, I had this thing too" β those took real attention to enumerate and replicate.
Hardest thing: cataloging 2 years of accreted product nuance. There's no Bubble export that gives you a clean spec.
Easiest thing: the coding itself. Once I had the spec, Claude shipped it fast.
What I can do now that I couldn't on Bubble
The thing that mattered most was monetization control. Native gives me proper ad scheduling, smart interstitial cool-downs, custom UX gates that prioritize the user experience while still monetizing. On Bubble I had to choose between ugly placeholder ad layouts (see screenshot) or no monetization at all.
Beyond ads β anything performance-sensitive (animations, gestures, scroll behavior, push notifications, deeper iOS integrations) is now actually possible.
[ATTACH BOTH SCREENSHOTS HERE β left: rebuilt React Native, right: old Bubble version]
The visual difference between these two screenshots is about 18 months of "I'll get to it" friction on Bubble that I solved in 3-4 days natively.
Would I migrate again?
100%. The only thing I'd change is doing it sooner β I'd have my evenings back a year earlier.
The single best filter for whether YOU should migrate
Can you describe your app in words without opening Bubble? Can you whiteboard the user flows, the data model, the why behind each feature?
I'm in the first camp (Data Engineer, can architect things on paper). That's why my migration was 4 days instead of 4 weeks.
For anyone else considering it:
Happy to answer specifics about the stack, the migration process, or how I prompt Claude for production-quality React Native code. Drop questions below.
Quick update for anyone who read the original post β today's the day. BeTeam is live on Product Hunt π
https://www.producthunt.com/products/beteam?launch=beteam
If you missed it: this is the social sports prediction app I rebuilt from Bubble to React Native in 4 days after 2 years of slow Bubble pain.
Honest reflection on launch day β it feels surreal AND weirdly anticlimactic at the same time. The rebuild was the dramatic part, but the real work was the 6 weeks AFTER (landing page in 6 languages, SEO setup, blog content, getting through Apple + Google review). The launch itself is basically just hitting publish on all of it.
What I'd genuinely value from this community more than an upvote: brutal honesty. If you click through and something's confusing, the pricing isn't clear, or the value prop is muddled β please leave a comment on PH (or here) saying so. Every "this is broken" comment is worth ten "great launch!"s to me right now.
And for anyone thinking about a similar Bubble β native jump: happy to answer any specific question about cost, timing, what I'd do differently. Drop it in a reply.
