I opened my GSC countries tab and saw people from 10+ countries had found my site. I built this in Mumbai. Nobody knew it existed.

Nobody tells you what the first real signal feels like.

Not the impressions — those show up early and mean almost nothing. Google finding your pages and deciding not to send anyone to them is not a win. It's just indexing.

The thing that hit me was the countries tab.

I'd opened GSC expecting the usual. Checked the countries breakdown mostly out of habit. And there they were — clicks from the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, Egypt, Morocco, and a handful of others I hadn't thought about once while building this thing.

I'm sitting in Mumbai. I built this on evenings and weekends after my day job. I told almost nobody it existed. And somehow people in countries I've never been to opened a browser, typed something into Google, and ended up on my site.

127 of them, over 3 months.

I know that's not a big number. I'm not writing this to celebrate. I'm writing it because 6 weeks ago the number was 2 — and those 2 were probably me testing on a VPN.

Here's the honest picture of what 3 months actually looked like:

Month 1 (April–May):
Basically nothing. 0 real clicks. Impressions slowly climbing from zero but all at positions 40–50 where nobody clicks. I was publishing content, fixing internal links, submitting to directories, and watching GSC show me a flatline. The loneliest phase of building anything — when you genuinely don't know if it's broken or just slow.

Month 2 (May–June):
Something started moving. Positions crept from 40 down to 34. A few pages started getting impressions for queries I'd actually targeted. Still almost no clicks — but the impressions graph started looking like a graph instead of a flatline. Then around June 15, my indexing count jumped from 400 to 1,200 pages in roughly one week. I still don't know exactly what caused it. I wrote about that separately.

Month 3 (June–July):
21K impressions. 127 clicks. Average position 29.7. 10+ countries in the tab.

The numbers that matter most to me right now aren't the impressions. It's that position number — 30.7. Most of my clicks are happening from pages that crept into positions 15–25. The pages still sitting at 35–50 are getting impressions and zero clicks, which is its own problem I haven't solved yet.

What I got wrong early on:
I optimised for getting pages indexed when I should have been optimising for getting the right pages indexed. I have 261 pages still not indexed — but honestly, some of those pages probably shouldn't be indexed yet. They're thin. I was so focused on quantity that I didn't think hard enough about which pages deserved Google's attention first.

What I didn't expect:
How much the internal linking fix mattered. I had hundreds of orphaned pages — pages Google had found but had no reason to revisit because nothing on my site pointed to them. Connecting them properly was unglamorous work. No before/after screenshot makes it look impressive. But I think it's the single change that moved the needle most.

What's still not working:
0.6% CTR. That means 99.4% of people who see my site in search results keep scrolling. At position 30 that's somewhat expected — but it's the number I'm most focused on fixing next. Better titles, better meta descriptions, and pushing key pages from position 20 into the top 10 where CTR actually becomes meaningful.

If you're in month 1 right now and your GSC looks completely flat:

It looked exactly like that for me too. The impressions graph was a flatline for weeks. No clicks. No signal. Just the quiet anxiety of not knowing if you're doing something wrong or just waiting.

I don't have a clean answer for how long to wait. But the countries tab that felt impossible 6 weeks ago has 10+ entries in it now. And I still haven't told most people this site exists.

That's enough to keep going.
