I own 36 domain names 🙈
Only 5 are somewhat useful.
3 are for things I am actively building.
The rest are for shower "ideas" I never built.
Sometimes I buy 2-3 domains for one idea.
How many domains do you own?
I own over a hundred, lol.
Most of them are for portfolio projects for my web development business. The rest are for app ideas, whenever I get around to them...
For the design/dev portfolio sites, I'll buy something like austininsurance.com (I don't own this site, it's just an example) and build a brochure site for a fake insurance company called Austin Insurance. Then I'll take screenshots and throw it on my site as a portfolio project.
Then, I add a blog post to it every day for a month, and then every other day for another month. Maybe run some facebook and google ads to get some traffic rolling in.
I'll also run google ad sense ads on the blog pages to pull in some extra cash.
If I can get it ranked on the first page of google, I'll cold call insurance companies (in this case for Austin Insurance) and see if they want to buy the domain and site. To get ranked for a top business niche in a big city, like in this example, you can get a lot of money (definitely over $20k, usually over $50k, sometimes over $100k).
I was a realtor for years, and I own some domains related to that business.
I also own domain names for my own name and each of my kids' names.
And then sometimes I'll buy stupid domains on a whim.
Most famously though, I owned TheChefShow.com. I went to culinary school after high school and worked in fine dining restaurants as a Sous Chef for about 6 years after that. Anyway, I decided I wasn't going to put the time into doing the cooking course that I bought the domain for, and I let it lapse after owning it for 7 or 8 years. A couple of months later Jon Favreau bought it and has his cooking show site up on the domain. A little bittersweet.
Curious how you go about selling those domains after you've built up some search equity and got them ranking. Is there a service for that? Like a domain marketplace
No service, you just have to use old-school sales tactics. So, with that insurance company example, I would call every insurance company/agent in Austin and tell them that I have a turnkey website that's ranked on the first page of google and that I'm going to sell it to the highest bidder.
Side note:
This is the best way to actually grow any business, SaaS included. If you are launching an app that is a tool for chiropractors to manage their schedule, you could run google and facebook ads and spend a bunch of money slowly growing your business, or you could pick up the phone and call the top 1000 chiropractors over the next couple of weeks (100 calls a day is pretty standard). It will take some time, but after some practice, you should be able to close around 5-10%. That's 100-200 new paying customers every month. Not too bad.
And, of course, you should run ads simultaneously, but you should never do just one or the other. To really kill it, you need to have advertising and other marketing endeavors as well as an aggressive sales campaign.

Yes, you need to pay. The aspiration of building the next big thing or cool thing keeps all these domains renewed year on year - atleast my story is like that.

Get a .com that contains the keywords people are searching for.
And there are many more I spotted but forcing myself not to buy until I build something 🤣
I am in the same boat. I have a list of app ideas and domains that could go with them, but I'm not buying any more until I get some crossed off my existing domain list.
I took a look and found that I have about 30 or more, of which only one-fifth is used.

I cant stop myself impulsively buying a domain as soon as I have an idea. Its probably better not to do this because A) its a waste of money and B) it makes letting go of an idea i'll never do easier if theres no domain
I used to have these amazing ideas and then immediately buy whatever it was without thinking. But now I have much more control over my impulsive habit of buying domains, if you know what I mean. Before making a purchase, I take the time to research and ask myself if I'll actually have the time and market for it. If the answer is yes, then I fully commit! Currently, I have three domains. The first one is my old portfolio site called jeeiee, the second one is a daily updated directory called Victrays, and the third one... 🤫well, it's a secret!😅
I currently have 16 domains. All of them related to the businesses I'm developing, but physical businesses based in Brazil. I've been buying domains, and keeping an eye on some logos that have become available. Some domains are brand names that I am gradually improving the reputation and gaining relevance, other domains with the name of the products I sell, which are varieties of plants. (one of the businesses is the sale of plants for the formation of hay fields). For my products I got the first google position in my country for all my products. But on my radar there are always about 5 to 6 domains that I always check for availability.
I own between 10-15 domains for the same reason, sometimes I come up with 2 or 3 per project occasionally I buy words that I think are cool at the time and I might be able to sell in the future.

Numbers here do not matter, it's a "vanity metric".

Yeah, but that's not what he's talking about. Actually, the opposite, I think. He's not bragging about how many he has, but rather talking about entrepreneurial developers' proclivity towards buying domains for any idea that pops into our heads.
Around 20+ - been thinking I need to sell some off.
In the past two years probably 10+. I generally try to buy domains that I can use at least for two different projects. I want to be able to use domain x for a social media tool and a browser extension.
