I paid $199 to test BetaList, so you don't have to.

A few weeks ago, I tested BetaList to promote kingdom.so.

I was unsure if BetaList is still a great way to promote a startup or a product. ProductHunt clearly dominates this market, and I thought people probably prefer only checking PH.

But Kingdom was not ready for a PH launch (the perfect target for BetaList 😂), and I was ultra-busy with my freelance gigs, so not disposed to handle: code for clients, code for Kingdom, and hustle for Kingdom at night...)

BetaList was an attractive way to have a traffic shot with a short workload for $199 (There is a free option, but you have to wait for one month to get featured, an eternity in my case).

BUT I was wrong, Betalist is still an excellent way to get traffic, users, and even customers for an early-stage project that targets entrepreneurs, startups, and tech people. If you sell flowers online, it's probably not a good move 😂.

Here the numbers:
I was featured the Feb 24, and I got:

  • 269 unique visitors
  • 20 new users
  • One in-app purchase at $100

To be noted, I was featured in the trending section also because my post was popular. 🎉

Okay, it doesn't look so fancy, 🙊 but the good thing with Betalist is that the traffic was well qualified in my case; users from Betalist were very interested in Kingdom and even helped me improve the app.

So I get a good return on my spending at this stage as every new active user worth A LOT.

Nice! Do you feel $199 was good value for money skipping the queue, or would you allocate that to other paid ads knowing what you know now?

At this time it was a good value as I have no time to allocate to marketing and it was really easy to set up.

I included Arbeitnow in BetaList under the free section, had to wait a little more than a month and have had around 80 unique visitors. It's not nothing but isn't that much either.

I took a different approach and waited for a month. 🙂

Last week they featured me and from what I can tell it's only a few folks come to visit (no sales either):

    • Launch day: 62 visitors
    • Day after: 32 visitors
    • Two days later: 19 visitors
    • Any day after: 10-13 visitors

I think most of it due to who my product is targeting, i.e., hiring teams who want to streamline their dev hiring. And I doubt those folks hang out at betalist to find a solution to their problem.

All-in-all, it's always a good idea to think in advance where your customers hang out and where they don't. 💡

I paid for https://entry.page to be featured on 01 March.

So far we’ve had about 70 registrations from Betalist. We’re launching in a couple of weeks so will be interesting to see how many of those turn into actual users.

I didn't pay anything and was featured about a week after submission. Got a few dozen visits. Very underwhelming.

Oh! Do you think that they prioritize also good products? one week seems really fast!

My product wasn't anything special. And I just checked Analytics and in total after two months I got 34 visits from BetaList.

    Thanks for sharing this!

Always curious on how these platforms are doing in terms of value.

Curious, how do you compare BetaList with the rest? Or the ones that you have tried?

    Thanks 🙏

I only tried ProductHunt with the MVP, but it was far too early; I launched on PH one day after to release the MVP as at this time Kingdom was a weekend project and nothing serious.

I payed $100 for the similar betapage.co and got 162 clicks, so a similar ROI. How did you engage with users? I've found chat bubbles are a bad way to really have a conversation with users (at least for me), most want to suggest one thing and not have a longer conservation.

I have a Discord group where we talk really often, I also do some user interviews by voice directly on Discord.

Interesting. How do you invite users to the Discord?

        1. 2

You can create a permanent invitation link, I put the link on the website and on the signup confirmation email :-)

It's clearly not high but it's still a nice way to get some early traction and feedback :-)
