I posted daily on Reddit for 3 months. Zero customers. Here's what I missed.

When I launched my first SaaS six months ago, I knew distribution would be harder than building. What I didn't expect was just how humbling Reddit would be.

I spent the first 3 months after launch treating Reddit as my primary marketing channel. I posted every single day. Memes in r/SaaS. Tutorials in r/startups. Long-form breakdowns in r/Entrepreneur. I followed every "how to market on Reddit" guide I could find.

The result after 90 days of daily posting? Exactly zero paying customers. Zero. Not one.

Here's what I was doing wrong — and what I wish someone had told me sooner.

The mistakes:

  1. I was posting where founders hang out, not where my customers hang out. r/SaaS is full of other builders, not buyers.

  2. I was promoting before I had context. I'd drop a link in a post and wonder why it got ignored. Reddit rewards value-first engagement, not links.

  3. I had no system for finding the right conversations. I'd scroll for 30 minutes and maybe find 1 relevant thread. That's not scalable.

  4. I treated Reddit like a broadcast channel. It's a conversation. The founders winning on Reddit don't post more — they listen more and reply in the right places at the right time.

The game-changer was flipping my approach. Instead of "what can I post today?" I started asking "where are my potential customers already complaining about their problem?" and then just showing up with a genuine solution.

    It’s so easy to confuse posting with distribution. But if you’re talking to other builders instead of people actually feeling the pain, you can get feedback, upvotes, even nice comments and still be nowhere closer to a customer.

    What I learned is, before posting anything about your own product, make sure you actually engage with the conversation. Do not pitch, or you will be kicked out, if you repeat.

    I’m seeing the same thing with my own SaaS. Reddit can bring very qualified traffic, but only when the comment is attached to a very specific pain.

    I’m building Web2Elementor, a tool that converts existing pages into editable Elementor templates, and broad promo posts don’t work nearly as well as answering someone who is literally stuck rebuilding a website manually.

    My current takeaway: Reddit is not a traffic channel first. It’s a pain-discovery channel first.

    I built a SaaS app, had a post on reddit in a r/wisp (so a dedicated community, only one post, not spamming everywhere, not daily posting), was appreciated by te users there (had 79% upvote and 5k views). Then after 10 days, i launched my app on producthunt, so i said i can post some replies in 2 subreddits but in threads made especially for founders to mention their apps (not separate posts). The result: my reddit account got banned.
    AI is banning real persons now, and the false negatives are not acceptable, imo. A solo dev struggles to engage a small community and then, after a lot of work, gets banned for something that was allowed in those subreddits. So reddit, good bye and good riddance!

    This matches what finally worked for us, almost point for point. Two things that moved the needle after a similar dead first stretch:

    1. Stop posting, start replying. Originals in founder subs are mostly seen by other founders. Your buyers are already in threads describing the exact problem you solve — search for the complaint, not the keyword. One genuinely helpful reply in an "I'm stuck with X" thread out-converted a month of our own original posts, because you show up at the moment of intent instead of interrupting.

    2. The reply has to stand on its own as help even if you delete the product mention. If it doesn't, it reads as an ad and gets downvoted or removed. Our rule: answer the question fully first, mention what we build only if it's genuinely the answer, and link only when an article actually resolves their problem.

    A few people already nailed the "be a useful regular, not a broadcaster" thing, so I'll add the dumb mechanical part that burned me worse. The subs you named (r/SaaS, r/startups, r/Entrepreneur) all basically confine promo to a weekly thread and quietly auto-remove a normal post that reads salesy.     The interesting question may not be whether Reddit works better as a conversation channel than a posting channel.

    It may be what conclusion deserves confidence from the first few customers you found through it.

    Those sound similar, but they can lead to very different decisions about distribution, positioning, and where future growth actually comes from.

    I wouldn't make that call casually from two conversions alone.
