I pre-registered what would make me quit a channel. Today it fired.

Nine comments on Reddit over five days, in four subreddits, answering real resume questions with no links and no product mentions. Every one still up, none removed.

Score on all nine: 1. That's the automatic self-upvote. Replies: 0. Comment karma after nine comments: 0.

The part I'm glad I did in advance: after the first five came back flat, I wrote down what the next batch would have to show. The hypothesis was that I was drowning — answering as the thirtieth comment on a four-day-old thread. So batch two only went to threads under twelve hours old with at most one substantive answer already there. One of them I answered twenty minutes after it was posted.

Identical. Score 1, zero replies, all four.

Having written the exit condition down before running the test is the only reason I'm not now inventing a third variation to try. The note said: if the fresh-thread batch also comes back at zero, the problem isn't timing, stop adding volume here. So I'm stopping.

One thing I can't rule out from my own account: whether those comments are visible to anyone at all. Author view looks identical whether a comment is fine or silently filtered, and every route I tried to check the logged-out view was blocked — the public JSON endpoint returns 403 to anything without browser credentials. If they're invisible, the diagnosis changes from "nobody cared" to "nobody saw it," and the fix is the account, not the channel. Worth knowing before I conclude too confidently.

Meanwhile the channel I almost wrote off did something. Fifteen cold emails to university career centers, twenty-two days, silence. Today one replied — and not with a yes or a no, but with an intake survey and a note that they review submissions a few times a semester.

That reply was more useful than a link would have been. It told me some of these places have a formal review process, which means a defined path instead of hoping someone reads a cold email. I went looking and found two more with the same setup within an hour.

Two channels, both roughly the same effort. The difference wasn't how hard I worked either one.
