A friend showed me their Shopify store last November and asked, "is this accessible?" I had no idea how to answer. Six months later AccessifyAI is on the Shopify App Store. Along the way I scanned thousands of themes through development. Six things surprised me.
1. Every popular Shopify theme ships with 5 to 10 WCAG 2.2 AA violations out of the box. Dawn, Refresh, Sense, Crave, Studio, all of them. Image carousels with no alt text, search inputs with no label (just a magnifying-glass icon), secondary buttons at 3.5:1 contrast (fails AA minimum 4.5:1), focus outlines removed via CSS reset, placeholder used as the only form label. Not the theme builder's fault, but every merchant inherits these on day one.
2. 25 of the 28 apps in the Shopify Accessibility category are overlays. Floating widgets that add nothing to the underlying page code. US courts ruled in Robles v. Domino that overlays do not protect against ADA lawsuits. NFB has an active class action against accessiBe. The category sells compliance theater. AccessifyAI is not an overlay. The widget ships skip links, ARIA landmarks, focus outlines as real semantic improvements. The AI part proposes real Liquid edits the merchant previews as a diff before applying.
3. EAA enforcement is real and merchants are not ready. EAA in force June 2025, BFSG in Germany September 2025 with fines up to 100,000 EUR per non-compliant store. Polish, French, Dutch enforcement queued for 2026. Most Shopify Plus stores qualify (over 10 employees or over 2M EUR revenue selling to EU). Almost none have done a real audit. Lighthouse catches about 30 percent of WCAG criteria, not enough.
4. Built for Shopify performance budget is brutal. Theme extensions have a 10 KB threshold per asset. My initial widget was 34 KB. I had to split into a 6.8 KB loader and a 16 KB panel that lazy-loads only on click.
5. Multi-language is hard because Shopify Managed Pricing localizes plan names. A Polish store sees "Podstawowy" not "Basic", German "Basis", French "Base". My first sync mapped by name substring and silently classified every non-English subscriber as free tier. Fix: amount-based fallback ($9.99 to basic, $29.99 to pro) plus locale token aliases. Cost me half a day to diagnose.
6. Pricing was the hardest decision. Competitors at $35-49/mo. I went $9.99 Basic and $29.99 Pro. The honest pitch right now is "I am new, give me a chance and earn your review." Whether that works long term I will know in three months.
Stack: Shopify Theme App Extension (Polaris web components), React Router 7 + Prisma 6 on Cloud Run, Groq + Llama 3.1 8B for AI diffs, Monaco editor for side-by-side preview, listings live in English, Polish, German, French.

If you run a Shopify store, scan it and reply with what was useful or not. Building in public, looking for first reviews and brutally honest feedback.
