I started crying without knowing why, and sprained my wrist punching the wall. Here's how I'm trying to stay sane now.

Wednesday, 9th June 2021. I started crying without knowing why.

Suddenly, anger came out, I punched my bedroom wall and I sprained my wrist.

I thought bootstrapping 12 startups and earning 6 figures would make me indestructible…

Indie hacking is a lonely journey, paved with emotional ups and downs.

To handle what it takes and protect ourselves, we need a system.

So here are 6 habits I use to stay sane (backed by science, books, and my own experience overcoming depression):


1. Sleep

Among all these habits, sleep is the most important and the easiest to master.

The lack of it kills more people than any other disease.

Getting enough sleep increases your productivity, and creativity and make you less likely to get upset or angry.

Here are a few tips for you to sleep better:

  • No alarm (only your body knows how long it needs to sleep)
  • No alcohol/coffee after 12 pm
  • Avoid segmenting your night by not drinking (too much) water before bed
  • Respect your inner clock and go to bed at the same time every day

2. Work out smart

Yes, working out is good for your body and your mind.

But I’m not going to repeat something you’ve heard countless times.

Instead, let’s talk about willpower and how to WANT TO work out.

There are 2 ways to be consistent and exercise every day:

  1. Do a workout that does not require any willpower: i.e. surfing, skating, climbing. We are lucky to be able to move anywhere with our laptops, so take advantage of it.

  2. Gamify your workouts: i.e. Run to avoid zombies or catch Pokemons.


3. Read

Here are 2 reasons I think every Indie Hackers should read non-fiction books:

  1. It takes a long time to get rewarded with your business. What you learn in books helps you make better business decisions and get rewarded faster

  2. Learning on a daily basis puts you in the right mood to crush your day

Here are a few tips to start reading:

  • “Read what you love until you love to read.”
  • Start small, just a few pages per day
  • Read before work to stay focused and get most of the book

4. Forget about goals

No boss, no deadlines. Ha, what a life!

Enjoying your freedom is great, but the brain is made to work better under constraints.

Most people wait until it’s almost too late to complete a task.

If your goals are not tangible and long-term, you’re likely to procrastinate.

Here are a few tips to be productive:

  • Split your work into chunks
  • Write a to-do list every day before working
  • Be tight with deadlines

5. Eat smart

This is not the classic “You should eat healthy” tip. You already know that.

What you eat directly impacts your energy and your motivation.

For instance, eating 1 kg of pizza (don’t do it) will make you want to have a long nap.

Use this to your advantage. Eat the salad for lunch to stay light, and keep the pizza for dinner to sleep well.


6. Daydream

The entrepreneur Scott Adams said, “Let your imagination be the user interface to steer your reality”.

Daydreaming is a form of meditation to hack your brain chemistry.

It energizes you and gives you the confidence you need to achieve your dreams.

The best part? It doesn’t even have to be true!

Here is how to get pumped every morning, just think about where you’ll be in 5 years (but don’t think about how to get there)


Before we wrap it up, keep in mind what’s best is what’s best for you. No one but you should tell you what to do.

    One thing I'd add to this list: develop an obsessive focus on the journey, instead of just the destination. It's cliche, I know, but things only become cliche because they're such widely good advice that they end up being repeated ad nauseam.

    Happiness is in the living of life. It's in the moments. Part of that is hitting goals, yeah. But that's short-lived. Within 6-18 months of hitting any big goal, even if you strike it rich, you acclimate and go back to your baseline.

    So it's worth paying attention to the moments.

    Personally, I have a habit of asking, "Why am I doing this?" and making changes when the answer is weighted too heavily in terms of some future goal. That's a sign I need to make the day-to-day more fulfilling, more interesting, more fun, etc.

      Exactly. It's so simple, yet it takes a while to realize this.

    Congrats for reaching 6 figure!! But this post scared me a bit, to be honest. I keep telling myself that once I am able to make a living from my projects everything will calm down... XD One thing that really helped me was finding a sport that I could do every week. Since I joined kick boxing I feel much better. Another thing that helped not to feel so alone was to surround myself with like minded people. That's why I started the WBE Space

      I think if you have a business you like that makes money and happy customers, you have a solid base.

      Plus, you're doing sport and hanging out with like-minded people in WBE, you're good 😊

      For me, it was a domino effect. My business went down, I lost $40,000 in the stock market, and other personal life stuff not going well.

      I'd have probably handled each of them well if it didn't happen at the same time, who knows?

    Been there! Forgetting about goals and daydreaming were unexpected, but I can get behind it.

    I think the most impassioned make the best entrepreneurs. I'm betting you punched the wall because you deeply cared about something - that was maybe going off the rails on you. Nice grouping by the way ;)

    I've been there. 20 years of startups with my fair share of punched walls. Raising a big family, fighting cancer, dealing with two family deaths in 10 days from Covid + all that aftermath.

    We're all going through some kind of shit-storm - and these make for good tips. So thanks for taking the time to write the post.

    P.S. - I'm a longtime user of the Forest app. Habits Garden has great UI - do you have a native iOS version planned?

        Regarding native > web apps...

        For me, it's the ability to use the app offline - especially a productivity tracker.

        My most consistent productivity hack is simply to put my iPhone in Plane Mode. If it's a browser-based productivity tool, then it requires I stay online to make use of it - which is always my undoing 😆
