I had an idea and was very excited about it.
It's a platform where entrepreneurs can share reviews and recommendations about reading material (books, blog posts) for people like them (entrepreneurs, indie hackers). A place where we can discuss about growing as entrepreneurs and find reading material to grow too. Why? Because I find that is a great way to learn about these topics. You can see a bit about it here.
So I started to gather feedback online in a few places. Response was positive, not overwhelming but positive. I also started to work on the landing page, but in the last days I've been seeing it all as a bit too optimistic by my part, like I could be executing other ideas that I believe will solve more urgent problems.
None the less, I don't want to miss this chance and it's something I'd like to build and try to grow with the community.
So I'm unsure now. I want to build it, but I don't know if it is a good idea to pursue it.
If the idea for your project is to encourage dialogue and information Exchange between entrepreneurs, perhaps consider a community-based social networking platform like "fishbowl" which is a similar structure to Indiehackers forum, or "mighty networks" or "community" app that allows for tiered paywall plans and Patreon integration.
Check these out, you might be able to find a home for your idea that is free of cost for you to generate and expand from. You could also create 15 to 60-second video shorts to share on YouTube or TikTok promoting each product as "special of the" week or month, but have good SEO in video titles and descriptions.
Use these channels to build a following and use the money collected from the audience to pay for the services required to build out the community. If you need further assistance building this project, I have ideas. hmu
Good luck
Thanks a lot. This all makes a lot of sense.
Instead of thinking of building 1 site for 1 market, consider that a book reviews/recommendations platform for communities might be an easier sell. Instead of selling the concept to every individual, you sell a book rec tool to community managers.
I'm in GrowthMentor community and one of their slack channels is a "Book Club" If that could be an actual book club spot in a platform, I think it would be a great cozy place to get my next book to read.
Think of like "Circle" for Books for online communities.
I speak about the books I read with other members at High Signal too, @Petecodes
And there's a few mentor communities here on IH, some slack groups, some discords. Empower their members to build book shelves, book reviews, and trade them would be cool.
another idea:
Also within every industry are reports/surveys/studies that are PDFs.
I had a hard time when I ran an industry newsletter, compiling all these. It's a missed opportunity because I just used google drive and gave world wide access. But to paywall that or to get some information on useful ness would be great.
You can sorta see some archive here: https://influence.directory/library
I tried to do this on my own site (before I sold it) with Algolia and a Google Sheet.
I can't imagine anyone has done better in this field than a google drive folder.
It's between books and blog posts, (you mentioned those two things) and can easily be missed if you're not squarely inside of one big B2B market.
Thanks for the good ideas, they are all very sound
Think of how far you have come to accomplish this.
Good thing takes time!
Don't stop!
This could grow up to be a big community.
Limiting your site to books has both pros and cons.
Pro:
Cons:
I have started working on something similar, curating content from around the web.
More like IMDB for content. I am also facing similar doubts about what I should do, niche down, or keep it general.
I have been procrastinating for too long, no more.
For the time being, I am blogging about a niche to start to bring some eyeballs.
With the intent that, maybe I can leverage this traffic when I finalize the curation strategy.
I would recommend you do the same. Start!
Thanks @anilraok , good luck to you too!
Instead of book reviews, I'd prefer to read and participate in the discussion of books.
There is not such a resource that would allow readers to discuss them!
All of them are only about the reviews.
But sometimes, as a reader, I'd like to ask other readers some questions, or even the author.
That's very interesting, I'll keep it in mind
I'm so very familiar with this feeling. I think every one of us goes through it. And it's like a cycle. You're super excited, you can literally see how things will be and look like, then doubt creeps in, and then you start to question all of it.
Just know that this feeling is completely normal. Push through it and do it without any expectations.
I think there's a lot of potential in what you're doing. You could do a newsletter where people optin to get weekly resources, then when you have a lot of u=subscribers, maybe you can charge people for getting included. I think it's a really good and simple approach that could really work.
Thanks, nice to know it's not just me, I appreciate it
I would probably test the ideas and decide based on that. Or even build 2 products if you have the time. That's because I think passion about your product(s) will help you stay motivated.
Probably just a simple landing page test where people can sign up and run some ads for like 50$ (or share organically).
The good thing about a community is, that a lot of growth will come with the network effect, while for other business models you might have to be on sales calls 5 hours per day..
So i could imagine that you can build the community product and maintain it but spend more time on building and growing your moneymaker.
That's a very good approach, thanks friend
de nada hermano, si te puedo ayudar con el tema del marketing, let me know 😊
Gracias, lo tendré en mente 😉
it tough. In the beginning it all seems like an exciting thing but over the time our enthusiasm subside. at this point, only those who keep going will finally have their dream come true.
Would this be a paid platform?
No, my intention would be to have it be free, surely further down the road have some specific paid features but still basically free. I've even thought about making it open source, though that makes maintenance much harder
