Ok, so it wasn't strictly my choice but that's beside the point! 😂 I had my Twitter account hacked and then suspended and as yet have been unable to resolve it.
In the meantime I wanted to keep building and posting about what I was up to. I had heard about WIP before but hadn't put in the time to figure out what it is all about.
Anyway, if you haven't heard about it - check it out at https://wip.co
It's a great community of builders who share their journey and help each other along the way. It has a built in to-do list that shows streaks when you do something each day. This alone is worth it for me as it keeps me accountable and productive.
There's an active chat group on Telegram with around 800 people too so you feel instantly connected to a community.
I signed up on the monthly plan but after about ten minutes wanted to upgrade to yearly!
Note - Marc didn't ask me to post this, I just like what he's built 😍
My sincerest hope is that we see these massive winner-take-all social networks (Twitter, Instagram, TikTok) fragment into smaller networks that are purpose-built for their niche and have the appropriate features and social norms. WIP is a good example of that, as is Indie Hackers.
That said, the big networks have the unique advantage that everyone is there, and anything can be discussed. It's a tough advantage to overcome.
On a more fun note, I considered adding WIP's streaks feature to IH product pages many years back. I never got around to doing it, but I also never took it off my to-do list.
It was pretty interesting to watch WIP unfold out of a Twitter thread for accountability(and motivation, I think).
I was watching keenly at the time as I’d recently kicked off a cross company (remote devs and designers) slack group. Unfortunately of the other two people who joined early one was extremely introverted and it basically devolved into a two person chat 😂. At the time there was no shortage of income for myself so motivation to push and grow the group was not there for me.
Another similar community that arose around the same time was Makerlog (not sure if that’s still alive and well or not) it looked pretty good to me (from an external view point/non member).
And then there was the Maker’s Kitchen slack group - that was pretty good but a little too gliphy and meme heavy for my taste.
Haha! If only you were using the WIP to-do list remind you to add a to-do list! 🤯 Cue Inception music 🎵
Wow. This is a unique kind of private community I have seen. Gives a feeling of social media and a community at the same time.
I'd love to get started with WIP too, probably the Telegram community for now. Does anyone know how to join the Telegram group (for WIP)?
You can just search for it I think, but you only have read-only access until you're a member.
I was about to join thinking it was a productivity twitter, then noticed the monthly fees....hard to make a dive like that .Maybe offer a fremium?
I thought the same initially which is why I paid $20 for a month first to trial it. Within 48hrs I had upgraded to the yearly plan as I found immense value in it. It’s not for everyone, but it works for me 😊
I haven't fully jumped onto wip.co yet, but I'm of the opinion that both it and IH are some of the best social platforms for builders like us.
I've had my eye on it for a while, but have focused most of my time here on IH.
I really hope that both IH and wip.co take off. I like the idea of fragmented social media dependent on interests and content.
Twitter is a cesspool of narcissists and bots. Reddit is a haven of utter pessimism and karma chasers.. and bots. I spend time consuming content on both platforms, and I do post on Reddit, but everyday I'm just getting that feeling of "I need to get away from this place".
Hey Rich 👋
Which side/part of Adelaide are you?
Hey Shaun! I'm in Glengowrie, where are you?
I’m at Maslin Beach 🏖
Moved from Glenelg about a year ago so I could ditch work for a couple of years and become (even more of) a beach bum! 😁
👏🏼☀️
