When I dug into my Stripe data, I noticed something strange. Customers were cancelling — but most of them had never logged in to cancel. Their subscriptions had just... stopped.
Failed cards. Stripe sent an email. The email landed in Promotions. They never saw it. Subscription gone.
Up to 48% of SaaS churn is this — involuntary. Customers who wanted to stay but got silently dropped.
The fix is simple: reach them on their phone instead. SMS has a 45% response rate. The lock screen is impossible to ignore. One tap opens Stripe's payment portal, they update their card, Stripe retries automatically.
I built RecoverPing to do exactly this — automated SMS + email recovery sequences on top of Stripe, no code required.
The insight that changed how I think about retention: before optimizing acquisition, audit your failed payments. You might not have a growth problem. You might have a dunning problem.
Happy to share what I found digging through the data if anyone's curious.
