I thought Stripe was 2.9%. My real all-in cost was 4.02%.

I exported my Stripe Balance CSV and realized the headline 2.9% was not the number that mattered.

The useful split was:

  • processing rate: 3.82%
  • all-in Stripe cost: 4.02%

The difference came from international cards, small charges, refunds, and other fee lines.

I wrote up the exact CSV-based method here:

Curious if other SaaS founders have checked their real rate recently.

I like the distinction between the advertised price and the price you actually experience.

Feels like a lot of SaaS metrics have the same problem. The headline number is easy to compare, but the effective number is usually the one that changes decisions.
