I tore down Linear’s pricing the way I’d tear down yours ($0 sample)

I sell 48-hour competitor teardowns. Before asking anyone to pay, I published a free one-pager on Linear — hot company, founders actually care about the category right now.

Three things that jumped out from public pricing/docs only:

  1. Guests are a $16 decision. Private teams + guests start on Business ($16/user/mo annual). On Basic ($10) there are no guests — so inviting support/CS into the workspace means upgrading every eng seat first, then paying for the guests too.

  2. Free is marketing, not a squad plan. Unlimited members, but 2 teams and a hard 250-issue cap. Plane’s free tier goes to 12 users with real projects/cycles; Shortcut free covers 10 users. Seed teams that ship hit the wall fast.

  3. The vs pages aren’t there. /vs/jira, /vs/plane, /vs/shortcut are empty shells. Plane already ships a Linear importer and undercuts Business seats ($13 vs $16; Pro is $6). Comparison SERPs are open.

Full free sample (same format as a paid job): who they are, 3 competitors, 5 openings —

If you want one on your competitor instead: paste a URL, $79, back in 48 hours, refund if late —

One useful validation step before treating a competitor gap as a buying trigger: ask 5 target ops leads to rank the frictions (guest access, team limits, missing comparison pages), then have each name the workaround or monthly cost they use today. If the same friction wins repeatedly, build that comparison page first; if nobody can price the workaround, it’s an interesting pricing observation—not yet a monetizable wedge.

The free sample proves you can produce the teardown. The harder validation is whether a founder sees enough decision value in it to actually pay $79. Have you had anyone buy after reading the sample?

Honest answer: not yet — the sample is public validation that the format is clear, not proof of demand. Next test is whether a founder with a live store and a stuck decision (pricing, positioning, or creatives) finds enough value to pay for a 48h brief on their brand. If you want, tell me your store URL + the one decision you’re stuck on and I can send the SAMPLE structure applied to public pages only (still no charge) so you can judge before anything paid.
