I'm thinking on going on founder mode for 1 year to see how much progress i can make if i do nothing except work on my startup for complete 1 year. I have tried this approach before for 3 months and was able to 3x the mrr in just 3 months.
So from my past experience i'm sure this kind of thing works but there are huge drawbacks to it as well. Burnout and loneliness are real drawbacks but i'm already tired of not achieving my goals and making progress like a snail.
I'm not wanting quick results but i'm tired of not achieving any major success in 6 years of full time indiehacking. In this phase in life i just don't want to waste any more time not doing focused productive work.
The plan for the 1 year founder mode will be -
No smartphone. Its addicting and easily wastes time. I will switch to a keypad based dumbphone.
Fixed working hours on laptop. I have installed cold turkey blocker app that shutdowns my laptop after fixed hours. I'm thinking of doing 8 hours of focused work per day. I want to do more hours of work but my eyesight is getting weaker from continuosly being on computer screen. I cannot afford losing eyesight. It's fine being broke than being blind.
Move to a different city. I cannot do focused work from the comfort of home. Its distracting and i easily fall prey to bad habits.
Enough sleep. Sleep at 9pm and wake up at 6 am.
Avoid unproductive work because it can lead to burnout. I used to waste time on mobile phones late at night (watching youtube or reddit) or browsing non-work related websites on my working hours. I will have fixed todo list for the day, i will complete them and i'm free for the rest of the day. No overwork. I will take sundays off to relax and avoid burnout.
Build a Saas and grow its mrr to $5k a month. If it reaches $5k mrr then from there it will be on autopilot and i can end this founder mode.
Fortunately i have a runway of 1 year from the revenue of my last startup and i'm free from employment for at least 1 year. So i want to utilize this time and money very carefully. The time is going to pass anyway.
Its a lot of sacrifice. Its not easy. But i think it will be worth it.
Now why im writing this post here is to ask for an accountability partner. I'm not asking that we work together on same project but anyone who just wants to be my accountability partner. We will do this together. Anyone who is frustrated and want to take massive action to bring massive change in their life.
Just for declaimer: I'm not 100% commited to doing this thing just yet but i'm seriously considering doing this. I have personal experience living this lifestyle for 3 months so i know i can do it again for a year.
I'm on the fence. So that's why i was thinking of having an accountabilty partner. If i don't find anyone i will do it solo.
If anyone is interested they can comment.
Hey Alok, congrats for your ambition! To react regarding your points
I think it's great but depending on your business you might need a smartphone, for instance if you launch an app. Or if your target is reachable through social networks. But on the idea this is great and bold.
Yeah I think 8h fully focus is enough, or else you start to be unproductive. Think about the pomodoro technique too to increase the focusness. Regarding the eyes issue, consider anti blue glasses and seeing often a specialist that could help
Yes, I think moving is a great way to turn a page and start a new adventure, like Jon Yongfook
Having enough sleep time especially in the long run is essential. At least 8 hours on average. Would also recommend 30min to 1h of sport every 2 days.
Be aware that the founder mode will somewhat never totally finish, as competitors will arrive and you have a constant need of updating your solution, adding new features , satisfy new user needs, etc, to stay attractive and keep a low churn rate.
I'm also highly considering launching a 12 Startups challenge at the beginning of 2025 so
let's keep in touch and share motivation :)
