Hi All,
My name is Artem, I'm a founder of BalanceViewer.
I just made a lot of updates on my landing page and added a promo video - https://www.balanceviewer.com/
BalanceViewer is an IOS app that was created to minimize time on tracking net worth, income and expenses without linking bank accounts, registration or providing any sensitive data about yourself.
I would be happy to hear your feedback about Site, App or Promo Video.
In case of any questions, feel free to ask!
Hi Artem,
this is just like a protocol of a think aloud session of me browsing your site and trying the app.
Title and value prop. Okay I have an idea. It's relevant as I do these things. But the image background gives me no info it's just a gimmick. Don't really know what differentiates you from other personal finance tracking apps.
Really long text. Don't wanna read this. Also don't want to click on the video. The video thumbnail with the woman isn't appealing. Also, yes I know my net worth.
Finally, some screenshots. I wanted to see the app before. I quickly skip through the features. I like the privacy and simple onboarding with no account. Encourages me to try the app.
Then there's a table that is very hard to read visually so I immediately skip it.
Anyway let's try the app.
App Store Screenshots and video look okay, but I don't spend much time and tap download.
There's a popular currencies section, but it's empty so what is it for? I search and find Euro. I add an account and balance. How does it work now? What are the unique features? How do I add transactions? I try a bit more and realize I can only add accounts, lists, categories and income.
But I want exact budgeting and spending. I do this with sheets. It takes one hour per month. Not ideal, but it's okay. I have assets managed in Portfolio Performance, which automatically manages prices.
I go back to the website and only now figure out it works for tracking by balance and not transaction. So it's not relevant for me. Why is the key differentiator hidden in a feature paragraph?
Also with manage all your assets I thought I can actually do it like in Portfolio Performance, but I can't e.g. add an ETF and update prices.
Finished.
My recommendations:
Hope this gives you some insights and is helpful.
Good luck!
Kai
Hi Kai,
Thanks for the feedback! At first I would like to say that I'm not an expert in marketing, since I have technical background. So for me the hardest thing for now to bring the idea for the end users. I think your suggestions will help.
I will replace the banner to show UI of the app
Do you think that I have to edit the test "Get control over finances" to something similar "Track account balances, not every transaction"? Will it be clear?
I'm not sure how to minimize the text, I've explained there the main idea, since it a bit different form other apps, I can't explain it in two words (if you can, I would be happy to hear your suggestion)
About the video, what video thumbnail is appealing for you? As for me it's ok, since it's also have gray background. This video as well as the site I did by myself, so I know that it's not professional but it's there to bring the idea to users as well.
About differences between versions I think you skipped it as you are not interested, I don't want to make this table on a half of the site, but I will think how it can be improved.
About popular currencies, it's a known issue, we are working to fix it (there should be 9 most popular world currencies). It reproducible only when you pass the tutorial very fast by clicking Next -> Next -> Next in a few seconds.
If you want budgeting and spending, this app is not for you.
"Why is the key differentiator hidden in a feature paragraph?"
It't there - #1:
Minimize your time tracking the most important financial parameters. See the big picture - keep track of account balances, not every transaction.
Thanks for the provided info and constructive criticism, I will try to improve the site and the app as much as I can!
Regards,
Artem
You're welcome. I'm also not an expert and learning daily.
I would probably take a step back and think about what customer you want to focus on. To my my comes:
I would focus on 1 for now, because:
Person 2 is much harder as:
The landing page, value propositions and copy will be different for those.
Let's continue with 1.
Your main quality is simplicity. It's much simpler to track a balance than transactions. Following the guide I linked above value props could be:
Enabling:
Get control of your finances.
Efficiency:
Quickly get an overview of your finances.
Get control of your finances in less time.
Get control of your finances with less work.
Get a faster overview of your finances.
Pain point:
Getting control of your finances doesn't have to be (hard | time-intensive | work).
Tracking all transactions is hard. Get control of your finances in less time by only tracking balances.
According to the guide the header text should be what your product actually is in the easiest language and not a generic value prop. And ideally just 10-12 words e.g.
Header: (Monthly) balance based finance tracker | (Monthly) balanced based finance tracking
Subheader: Tracking all transactions is hard. Get control of your finances in less time by only tracking balances.
I would add one simplified product screenshot where you add a balance. Edit and crop the screenshot in some design tool so that only the main elements are visible and readable.
About the text:
We know this from the header / subheader.
To make it even more clear you can consider adding a simple "How does it work" process section. I would structure it like this with some visuals like arrows etc. You could also write: "Your financial overview in just two steps per month."
This is a secondary benefit. It's in the feature list below.
The video isn't so important probably. Show it later. Most don't want to watch videos. Consider small gifs / videos instead like https://emailmeapp.net/ does. But I would not spend much time on this right now.
Just search for other pricing plans and tables. There's so many and they are much more readable.
Yes exactly, but in my opinion this is the wrong place. It should be on the top. Don't want to scroll and look into details to find this out. I need to know this in few seconds. I tried to integrate this into my header idea.
Good luck!
Sounds awesome, thanks for sharing your ideas, really appreciate! Hope to implement big part of this on upcoming week!
Hey, neat app! I currently track my net worth in a spreadsheet, so I think I'm the target market.
The website expressed the capabilities of the app well but I wasn't sure what the intended benefit is to me.
I track my net worth to make sure I'm on track for my retirement goals, and to feel a sense of security and stability. I'm sure there are more.
Maybe you can express those benefits and others? And how your app delivers them?
That said if the target is people who already know they want to track their net worth perhaps it's not useful
Hope that helps
Hey! Thanks for the feedback. The app is a mix of net worth tracker + classic tracker with income and expenses. The main difference from other trackers is that you don't need to waste time tracking hundreds of expenses every month. All you have to do is keep track of your account balances once a month and add all your income. The total amount of expenses will be calculated AUTOMATICALLY based on account balances and income.
You can track your income and expenses over time as well as net worth. Create different combinations of accounts, have multi-currency accounts with up-to-date exchange rates and good visualization of all your changes. To track the same in spreadsheet you have to do a lot of actions, update formulas, chart and so on. I did it as well in spreadsheet before, but now I don't :)
What things may be important for you personally? Also I got a feedback from users that they are tired to track finances in details, and looking for something simple to track on monthly basis, not daily.
Regards,
Artem
Thanks for the explanation! I understand it better now. It does resonate with me that I did do the spreadsheet with a bunch of formulas :)
How about something like:
Track your income, expenses, and net worth overtime:
✔️ Quickly, without entering individual transactions
✔️ Securely, without linking to a bank account
✔️ Offline-mode, so you can update your info on the go
✔️ No ads, since they won't help with your personal finances
Benefits:
➕ Insight, understand what events contributed to your success over time
➕ Confidence, that you are staying on track to meet your goals
➕ Self-audit, so you can course correct after over-spending
Not sure those are so tight, but it's what came to mind :)
Sounds great. I'm thinking also about adding info that spreadsheet with formulas are not needed anymore :)
It's really hard to bring the idea to users, as it is a bit different from other money trackers, but I hope to find my niche)
I wonder how many people have these spreadsheets?
It's probably a decently large number, but a very small % of the population.
Could be an interesting niche but I imagine they are a "power-user" segment that would require different messaging
Yep, that make sense, I didn't do marketing before, so looks like I need to learn a lot of things to push the product)
you and me both. Good luck!
Thanks! You too!
