First post showing Linkpunk to IH on Jan 3rd.
Subscriber count as of writing: 777.
First, I want to preface that this quick growth won't be attainable for every type of newsletter. However, I've now built two newsletters (a crypto newsletter that grew to 14K subcribers) and my most recent passion project Linkpunk so I'm fairly confident in my ability to get subscribers. So to build Linkpunk, here is what I'm doing.
You need to be launching consistently. If your newsletter is targeted towards makers (everyone should do this anyway), you NEED to be launching on all the related platforms like ProductHunt, Indie Hackers, HackerNews, etc. If you’re product is targeted towards other groups, you need to find where those readers exist and launch there. Reddit is a great place to find almost any community you can think of.
Places on Reddit you can launch right now…
In r/SideProject and r/EntrepreneurRideAlong specifically, feel free to share your updates too. If you just hit 1,000 subscribers, share that! These subreddits love learning about success and how it’s done. Just make sure to share the ups and the downs along with your learnings.
Other communities may be less welcoming to your launch, but if you follow the next point, you’ll probably be in a good spot.
Don’t be a salesman trying to get subscribers. The internet, especially Reddit, is good at sniffing motives out.
When you post to communities, you need to truly be authentic and offer value before asking for anyone’s email. Maybe you post a snippet of your content. Maybe you ask a question to spark up a thoughtful discussion. Sometimes you don’t even need to link directly to your newsletter before someone will ask “Link?” and boom, you can plug your newsletter without looking like a total slimeball.
But in order to offer value, you need to know that…
Gone are the days where you can simply curate news. You need to really convince people in a sentence why they should give you, a stranger over the internet, their email address so you can hit their inbox.
That’s why to really fuel growth, you need to find content that is absolutely exclusive.
With Linkpunk, I’m doing the legwork of finding really cool, unregistered domains that makers can use for their projects.
In my crypto newsletter, I used interviews to get exclusive content.
And if you are using interviews…
Starter Story, No-Code Exits, Workspaces are perfect examples of newsletters that create a flywheel of growth from sharing subscribers’ stories.
If you get featured in a newsletter, you’re 100% likely to share that with your own followers or community.
Leverage that. Start creating content that spotlights others, even if it’s a little section, and give those subscribers a reason to share your work with the world.
And if they are sharing your work with the world make sure to have a…
Give readers an incentive to invite others easily. Morning Brew and The Hustle are both notorious for growing to millions of subscribers via referral programs. Study them. Make the rewards bad-ass and generate sustained growth through the most powerful type, word-of-mouth.
There are lots of no-code services that do this for you like SparkLoop or Viral Loops but it really doesn’t have to be that complicated in the beginning. Early on for our crypto newsletter, we manually tracked referral counts with a Google Sheet then sorted by most referrals to reward those subscribers.
But to grow fast you need to up the ante sometimes. That’s why you should…
In addition to your referral program, you need to leverage giveaways. Once again, the newsletter greats utilized giveaways to grow quickly.
Morning Brew would give out Macbook Pros to their mostly-college subscribers. You need to find something that resonates with your audience.
If you cannot afford to buy giveaway gifts yourself, look to partner with a company. With our crypto newsletter, we would partner with dev teams and giveaway tokens, hardware wallets, etc. It’s a win-win situation because they get eyeballs on their product and we get growth from new subscribers.
You may have some strong churn after these subscribers come but that’s okay. If you’re offering valuable content, many will stay.
This might be a hot take. I realize that there are tons of Substacks that crush it. However, if you want to stand out from the bunch, you should build your own landing page. Just take a look at Linkpunk. It’s simple, quick to the point, and took a few hours to build. Shell out the couple bucks for a domain and start collecting subscribers there. If you do it correctly, I’m confident your conversion rate will go up.
These are tactics that I’ve followed and have had success with. If you’re reading this as a newsletter owner, feel free to reach out to me @kylesamera on Twitter and maybe I can offer some tips/help on how to grow. Plus, I always like connecting with other makers and hearing about what they’re creating. Happy Sunday and cheers to a productive upcoming week!
Thanks for sharing your journey so far. I've been reticent to share on Reddit because, as a crowd, it can come down hard on anything self-promoting. But I really hadn't thought to post on the ones you shared.
Cheers Kyle
Yeah Reddit can be tough sometimes! Those ones look perfect for your newsletter, though. I just subbed!
Awesome thanks!
I just posted in EnterprenuerRideAlong. I wrote a recap of what I've done from idea (Dec 21st) to today.
Well done! Post looks great.
Great post! Early stage founders often underestimate the effort needed for the distribution of a product/service. And having a good content strategy is a must. These are some great tips.

Awesome post. Thanks for sharing this piece @ksamera.
What's your thoughts on starting a brand new twitter account, how would you approach it?
I’m in the process right now, it’s going to be a learning curve for sure but I’m going to air on the side of consistent content and interaction will grow it. It might start slow, but I’m just going to keep pumping out tweets there and eventually something might hit:)
This is really insightful, learnt a ton on this, especially the subreddit links , thanks for sharing
Wow this is really helpful! Congratulations on your success. Definitely taking note here.
Hi Kyle! Just launched on Reddit based on your advice - fingers crossed :). Thank you so much. Really appreciate it.
That's awesome! Best of luck on your newsletter, I just signed up btw. Really cool concept.
Thank you so much. Right back at ya! Really cool concept and signed up to Linkpunk as well :) Go get 'em!
Hey Kyle,
Thank u for sharing this!
I'm ready to apply it on Instafiles

Congrats! Does Product Hunt allow newsletter launches? I never launched mine there because I didn't think they allowed it.
Yes they do! Several examples of newsletters getting featured! Check out here: https://www.producthunt.com/search?q=newsletter
Interesting, thanks!
Hello James, could you please support our product hunt page?

Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing
Wow, impressive growth for Linkpunk in such a short period of time 👏
I liekd the referral program part to fuel your growth, thanks for sharing the no code tools SparkLoop and Viral Loops.
Have you ever considered collaborating with other newsletters or influencers in your niche to further expand your reach and drive even more subscribers?
Keep up the great work!
Thank you for reading!! And collaborations are definitely something I will explore down the road. I haven't quite used other newsletters yet but I assume that they can be really helpful. As for influencers, I definitely have used them in the past and 10/10 recommend it. If I remember correctly we gained 500 subs from one tweet back in the day for our crypto newsletter in 2018 from a guy with ~30K followers.
Thanks for the update! It's awesome to hear that influencer marketing has worked so well for you in the past.
Will keep it in mind for the future
Thanks for the mention of NoCode Exits Kyle 🔥
I'm already at 700 subscribers but still a very valuable article full of golden nuggets!
Of course! Love the newsletter and landing page by the way. Happy to link you here.
I've just started building a community ( https://www.indiehackers.com/group/reddit-growth-mindset ). Trying Indie hackers for now as my audience lies here but I'm not having a very great time while working on it. Maybe I lack the approachability strategy but for sure looking out for some advice and help!
Hey! The link isn't working for me
Which link?

Great post!
You mentioned launching on hacker news.
How do you launch a newsletter on hacker news without getting banned or ignored?
Can you share some examples of HN posts successfully promoting a newsletter?
Thank you for the kind words! You’re not allowed to “ShowHN” per the rules since it’s not like an app but you absolutely can share your content with the community there, although it might not be a straightforward “launch”.
Some examples of good posts:
Thank you for sharing, these are really cool examples, very helpful!
Thanks for sharing🔥This has really solved a challenge for me. I will certainly implement this👍
Building a solid custom landing page is under-rated advice. I would go further, the entire website/home page matters a lot in converting early visitors.
Yes 100%! It’s such a small step to making visitors feel more welcomed than a Substack form.
Thanks for sharing! There are more communities on reddit that allow self-promotions. for instance: https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/, https://www.reddit.com/r/iosapps/, https://www.reddit.com/r/androidapps/. Read the rules before posting.
Good list! These are less so for newsletters but if the newsletter is related to the sub, totally go for it!
Congrats and Thanks for sharing that
Thank you for reading!
Congrats on this milestone!
